My yard has wild cats. How do I get them to leave humanely and safely?

You can use an invisible fence, and there are ones specifically for cats. That would help keep your cat in your yard and out of your neighbor's yard. Other than the other things you have suggested, short of monitoring him every time he goes outside, it will be very difficult to keep him out of their yard. I know you aren't willing to make him indoor only, but that is the only way to keep him out of their yard for sure. I would look into an invisible fence for him.

I suggest you use a motion activated sprinkler. It will go off when the cats trip the sensor. Once they get wet, I assume they won't want to come back. Tends to work really well. Unfortunately if you are planning on keeping him indoor / outdoor, it is very difficult to keep him away from other stray cats. I would recommend ensuring his vaccinations (Feline Leukemia, Rabies and FVRCP) are all up to date to prevent transmission of these diseases. There are motion activated sprinklers you can get that will startle cats and keep them away from your property and you can find these online quite easily. Really, keeping him indoors is the only 100% way to keep him away from stray cats. I hope this helps! I have 5 cats and live in the same kind of environment. Our cats are also inside outside cats and I can tell you how we manage: 1) we feed twice a day wet food and call the cats for it. They come running for their food, we use the same call every time. This ensures that your cats come home when you call them. 2) Our cats are to be inside at night. ie we do not let them out after the evening feed. 3) they can go out if they wish, after the morning feed. Most predators hunt at dusk and dawn. So this minimizes the opportunity for contact of the cats with predators. If you can replace door handles with door knobs, the cats cannot open the doors anymore. We have been doing this for 12 years now, and have not lost a cat yet.

If that doesn't work, contact Animal control and find out how you can legally (if owned) prevent them from entering your yard or have them come and capture the cats (strays or ferals). You can also purchase noise deterrents that are turned on my motion. Maybe over time the cats will avoid your yard if they find it "scary." I wish you and barney the best!

I am so sorry to hear that this has happened. So very upsetting. If you can identify the entry point for the stray cat I would try and find a way to close it or prevent the cat coming in again. If the cat is in your house now and you feel you can get it out safely using perhaps a broom to scare it out without injuring yourself or the cat. I would suggest that. If not try calling animal control to remove the cat from your home.

Unfortunately, there isn't anything that is going to bother the dogs and not your kitty. I would recommend exploring physical barriers if possible - something like the green chicken wire fencing that dogs can't walk through, but you can see through fine.
