My rat won't take meds. Do Metronidazole & Panacur need refrigeration?

Hello, I went to the vet the other day for my pet rat and they diagnosed him with either giardia or tritichanomas. 1) the meds I got were a strawberry flavored metronidazole solution and a chalky white paste panacur suspension. Nothing on the bottles indicate that they should be refrigerated and the vets didn't say they should be either, but should they? 2) I can not give my rat his meds. I have tried mixing w baby food, and holding him down can't get syringe in his mouth. Any suggestions?

These medications do not need to go in the fridge. You might want to take Spiore to the vet again so they can show you how to administer the meds, it's important to control the head as well as the body of your rat when you insert the syringe in his mouth, it's a technique that you need to see in order to be able to execute it.

Most liquid metronidazole suspensions are compounded, and for the most part they are oil based suspensions. If this is the case for your bottle of metronidazole the main reason that refrigeration is recommended is to prevent bacterial contamination, not to preserve the medication. Unfortunately your rat will most likely need antibiotics to help him get over his upper respiratory tract infection and you will need a prescription from your vet for this. My rat won't drink her antibiotic water. What are my options?

You may need to mix the antibiotic in a syringe of water and give it to her that way. If the antibiotic is a liquid you may also be able to mix it with peanut butter and feed it to her. You will need to ask your veterinarian about the exact dosage because it will be very different from the amount you’re putting in her water bottle. How to give my cat a pill easily? Can I crush metronidazole?

Yes we do. I would definitely use either pill pockets (from your local pet store) or a pill gun (can be purchased from the pet store as well- check your local listings or your vet). You can try to mix it with some tuna. Metronidazole is ok to grind up if needed. Best of luck!

Thanks for reaching out about Thicket and including photos. Metronidazole is a fairly good broad spectrum antibiotic with some anti-parasitic (flagellates) activity. But no antibiotics treats everything and if the clinical signs are not improving, adding a second antibiotics might be helpful. Monitor environmental temperatures and humidity. Can I mix my aggressive cat's liquid diarrhea medicine with food?

Yes, you can mix the metronidazole with the canned food. If he doesn't let you syringe the medication into him orally, then mixing it into the food is the only way you'll be able to medicate him. Do the best you can to get at least the metronidazole into him, as this is most likely to stop the diarrhea. Good luck!
