Iguana mouth rot & breathing: Is metronidazole the right antibiotic?

I was looking for a second opinion , a my vet suggested metronidazole at 20 mg/kg once a day for 7 days as a treatment for my new igunas mouth rot and minor respritory distress , however he did not run a sensitiveity test as he felt no need . I rescued her 3 days ago, She appears female , is dangerously skinny , has worms , bad skin condition, now has diarrhea but that may be the worms or the fact I started assist feeding the day I got her anyway what is your opinion on the antibiotic treatment?

Thanks for reaching out about Thicket and including photos. Metronidazole is a fairly good broad spectrum antibiotic with some anti-parasitic (flagellates) activity. But no antibiotics treats everything and if the clinical signs are not improving, adding a second antibiotics might be helpful. Monitor environmental temperatures and humidity. Keeping nutritional intact high will also help.

Without an image, it is difficult to make detailed recommendations. In general, maintain pristine water quality and chemistry. Monitor for elevated ammonia or nitrite levels and perform partial water changes as needed. Use only conditioned water that is temperature matched to prevent stress or shock. Consider adding in a second antibiotic, such as Kanamycin, to treat gram negative bacterial infection. When treating the tank, be sure to remove the carbon filter insert during treatment.

My cat has gingivitis, and vets gave conflicting advice. What's best?

From this picture the level of plaque does not justify the gingivitis, as there is not much plaque on Mimi's teeth. So it could be that the nature of gingivitis is viral, or it could be just immuno-mediated. Further testing is required to understand if the cause is a virus. If these test are not available, then symptomatical treatment is advisable. Flagyl is an antibiotics that we commonly use for gastro-intestinal bacteria so perhaps I would consider a different antibiotic with a broader spectrum.

My pet has mouth rot. How treatable is it with vet antibiotics?

It is treatable and often resolves fully. Due to their slow metabolism it does take quite a long time though. Just take Ruby for all her treatments and correct any husbandry issues that may have contributed to the mouth rot. http://www.anapsid.org/stomatitis.html

Kirito is adorable. Thanks for including a picture. I'm glad to hear that it sounds like he is already improving, but I would recommend giving the medication. Metronidazole is an antibiotic, but it specifically works well to decrease inflammation in the large intestine and help resolve diarrhea, so I would recommend giving it as directed to help resolve the diarrhea.
