How to give my feisty cat Giardia medicine he'll actually eat?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I would not recommend the albendazole as it has cause a bone marrow toxicosis when used in cats. Very dangerous situation. The current thinking is to treat these cats with fenbendazole & a probiotic like Purina FortFlora or Proviable KP. Check with your vet about switching to the fenbendazole. Take care.

Yes, you can mix the metronidazole with the canned food. If he doesn't let you syringe the medication into him orally, then mixing it into the food is the only way you'll be able to medicate him. Do the best you can to get at least the metronidazole into him, as this is most likely to stop the diarrhea. Good luck!

You can try and see if having the medication compounded at a compounding pharmacy to a very small dose and with good flavoring that can be disguised well enough for Wendy to take. Otherwise, you will need to consider having her kept at a veterinary clinic as medical boarding and have the veterinary staff try and medicate her for you. I hope this helps! Without seeing Z in person, I can't say what is the best course of treatment for him. I'd trust your vet's decision, but if you do have questions, you can always take him into another vet for a second opinion.

Hello. I am sorry that Jagger has giardia. You should be able to get a prescription from your vet that diagnosed the giardia. In general Metronidazole (sometimes sold as 'Flagyl') is used to treat giardia. Of course, if you think your family has this then you will need to go to the doctor to get a stool sample done, and get medication from your family from your doctor. Other medications can work as well however Metronidazole is the most common 'go-to'. Best of luck with Jagger.

Metronidazole is a drug that is best given every 12 hours to be effective and that is what is stated by research performed on how it works in the body. If pilling him is too difficult you can try a liquid formulation or even consider not using it at all and trialing a probiotic or bland diet.

Hi from Bangladesh! Don't worry, it may take a few more days to see improvement. You may also try a bland diet of boiled chicken, rice, and plain canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) to help firm up the stool. Using a probiotic for cats and dogs can help as well. Hope this helps!!
