My rabbit has worms in its poop. Vet visit or over-the-counter meds?

You may have luck going to the pharmacy to ask your question since your options sound very limited. Most worms in a kitten are roundworms, which can be treated with pyrantel (commonly found over the counter in a pet store in the US). It needs to be dosed twice, 3-4 weeks apart. Tapeworms are flat, and there are also over the counter dewormers for that, as well. It is most likely that Penny has a lot of worms in her digestive tract and that, after vomiting, one of the worms was in her nose and came out when she sneezed.

You are not giving the correct medication. If you are seeing tapeworms, small flat worms or rice like segments near the anus, then you need a prescription dewormer from your veterinarian. I recommend taking a fecal sample in and have them look for parasite eggs under the microscope. Then they can make sure they give you the proper medication. Those look like they are probably roundworms. She would have gotten them from coming into contact with infective eggs in the soil most likely. (From where another dog pooped and that poop contained roundworm eggs, then your dog was nosing around near where that was (even if there was no obvious poop on the ground, the eggs will stay in the soil). It is not a result of the food. You can get effective roundworm treatment over the counter. Look for a pyrantel product and follow the label instructions. Feed stores will generally carry it. The two main types of worms you can see with the human eye is tapeworms and roundworms. Since these don't look like tapeworms to you, purchase an over the counter dewormer for roundworms and give it to see to see if it helps. If you do take her in, make sure to get her vaccines done. Rabies vaccines are very important for any animals who has contact with people so you may consider having this done regardless. That is a lovely kitty you have there! If the worm you saw looked like a little squirmy grain of rice, then Cadbury has tapeworms. This is easily treated with a cat wormer that contains praziquantel. You should be able to get that from your vet, or over the counter from a pet shop. You can also order it over the internet. Drontal for cats would be such a wormer.

Parasitic worms, coccidia, giardia & others are parasites that can cause diarrhea, weight loss, bleeding & other problems inside the body, primarily in the intestines. From your description, it sounds most likely that Hummer has hookworms, but roundworms are also possible. While it would be ideal to have a stool sample analyzed by his vet to determine if any other parasites are present as well (many can only be seen microscopically), there are a number of dewormers available over the counter to treat both roundworms and hookworms. Dewormers containing either pyrantel pamoate or fenbendazole are generally effective against these parasites as long as you are dosing for Hummer's current body weight. Be sure to repeat the dose in 3 weeks. Clean up your yard well after each bowel movement to prevent Hummer from becoming reinfected with these worms. I hope this helps and that all goes well!
