My rabbit isn't eating after dental surgery. Is this normal?

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Male | neutered

Hi, my rabbit had his molars trimmed last Wednesday. The points on his molars did cut into his cheek and tongue so he's obviously been in pain. He has pain medication but he's still not eating. It's been 3 days. He doesn't eat anything on his own so I'm syringe feeding him at the moment. Is this normal after 3 days? Also how often should I feed him and how much? He currently weighs 1.5kg and should weigh 2.2.

Continue syringe feeding him and medicating him. If you can get some Oxbow Critical Care for Herbivores, that would be recommended. Have him rechecked by your veterinarian when you can to rule out any complications from the procedure. If his teeth needed extensive work, the recovery period may be prolonged.

Make sure he gets enough fluid , you may have to syringe the water into your rabbit. If you can get "Critical Care" you can mix that with water and feed him this if he stops eating. Gut stasis can be life threatening in rabbits.

How quickly should my rabbit eat hay after dental surgery for a spur?

Hello. Generally, within a few hours of recovery we want a rabbit to start eating. While burring down a spur should not be a particularly invasive or painful procedure, rabbits can be quite sensitive to anesthesia. My rabbit grinds teeth after dental surgery. Is it due to pain?

Poor Flopsy! Grinding teeth can be a sign of pain, so hopefully when you give him his pain medication, this behavior will stop. If it does not stop, becomes louder or more frequent, or he stops eating, I would take him back into the vet to be checked out. I hope this helps!

Yes, I think you should take him back to the vet. These guys tend to get GI stasis ( where the intestinal tract stops moving) after surgery sometimes and it is best to get him treated before it gets too bad. It could be the pain meds but I doubt it.

Your vet should have it, most veterinary clinics that treat rabbits have this or something similar in stock. your rabbits should not need it though, if everything goes well, most chances are they will get back to eating within several hours after the surgery.
