How can I protect my cat's ears from scratching without a cone?

Poor Angie. Do not put anything in her ear. It sounds like she has an ear infection, but her ear drum needs to be examined to make sure it's intact before putting in any medication. Only the vet can do this. My recommendation is to put a cone on her so she cannot scratch her ear any longer. You can get one at a pet store or make one at home. I am sorry Muchacho is not feeling well. Yes, you can buy an e-collar typically over the counter at your local pet store. This would be a good idea if Muchacho is causing injury to his skin. However, if he is really itchy I would recommend taking him to the vet for treatment of the ear mites and maybe antibiotics for his skin. Typically the ear mites will not resolve just from being cleaned. I hope that helps

I would absolutely recommend getting the cone since it is the only essentially surefire way to prevent significant amounts of self-mutilation. Kitty definitely won't like it but it is for his own good. In terms of flea and tick medications, my favorite one to use is the Seresto collar. I find that in my geographic area it seems to be the most effective option. This certainly could be different where you live, and as such, I would tend to tell you to consult with your local vet and other pet owners for feedback. In terms of healing the affected regions, they look to me to be significantly inflamed and likely partially infected. At this point, they likely would benefit from an oral antibiotic which would require making a trip to your vet for the prescription. In terms of treating the environment, multiple flea bombs may be required. In some cases, hiring an exterminator is the only solution. I hope this helps.

There are several different types of collars, so you may need to try a different kind. Some are hard plastic. These you need to feed over a collar or some thick string to secure it on the neck. Not too tight, but tight enough that it cannot easily slip over the ears. Another kind is a soft, floppy blue fabric-like collar. These are useful in cats because they can either go forward over the head or backwards to cover the body. When Oreo tries to lick her incision, it should scoot down to cover her. Another type is shaped like a bowl. It uses velcro to secure over the head. These are very effective but not very comfortable since they can be very heavy for kittens. Another option is to get a small baby onsie or kitten body suit. You can cut a small hole so that she can still go potty and for her tail to fit through. I see what you mean about the scab on Breeze. It could be she has an ear infection, and those can be caused by bacteria or yeast, not only ear mites. It's unlikely she got ear mites from the vet. I also do not think it's an allergic reaction to her vaccines. That would have occurred quite closely after the vaccine was administered. Finally given that she has been on her food for three months, I don't think it's due to the food. It could also be she injured herself. I would put an Ecollar on her to keep her from scratching at it (I will put a link below on how to make one at home), and keep an eye on her. If she keeps try to scratching at her ear, or the scab appears infected (red, swollen, warm to the touch, pus), then take her back into the vet. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

Unfotunately the area around the eye is very difficult to cover with a bandage and probably Mimi would remove the bandage as well! I would suggest to try again the collar, most of the time cats need time to adapt but after 24 hrs are fine. Maybe insted of a plastic collar try a soft fabric collar, they are not as good as the hard one to prevent scratching but cats tend to tollerate them better.
