Getting a new kitten? How to prevent picky eating habits.

Often providing a wide variety of foods and flavors actually promotes picky eating. If they are otherwise well I recommend you pick a one flavor formulation of high quality brand sch as hills science plan or royal canin and put down one sachet at a time, adding more if this is eaten. Cats are grazing feeders and are likely to prefer little and often, as long a s a complete balanced dry food and fresh water is available at all times they should self regulate their own food intake. Be sure to have more feed and particularly water stations than you have cats to ensure there is no territorial bullying preventing any of them from eating when they would like to

Hello, and thank you for your question. There is no limit or minimum flavours needed for wet food - it all depends on the cat's preferences. Some cats prefer only one brand and flavour for many years, while others prefer variety and like to switch it up every so often. I do agree that getting your kitten used to different flavours and textures now is the key to preventing a picky eater. I can't tell you how many flavours you should start with, but know that you will eventually need to switch his kitten food over to an adult diet anyway, usually by about 1 year of age, so the type of food you feed will eventually change anyway. If there are only two available foods for kittens in your geographic region I would feed the one that your cat is most likely to consume without problems. If for some reason your cat begins to have issues with that type of food I would feed the other one but consider adding something like chicken broth or tuna juice to it. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the question. There are some dogs and cats that are picky eaters like Baluu. When you bring home a new food if Baluu is willing to eat it, this is likely what is going on. You can approach this two different ways. One is to stick to one food and see if after a couple days Baluu gets hungry enough to eat it. The other is to simply buy small bags of food, and switch to a new food every few weeks. My own dog is quite picky, and after months of trying, I gave up and now we just rotate through different foods. He is happy, and I am no longer frustrated trying to get him to eat. I do recommend that when you switch foods you mix the old food and the new food together for a few days to avoid stomach upset. I hope this helps.

Whiskas is not a good quality food, if you plan to change the food, which i think is a good idea, try to switch to a different brand such as Orijen, Acana or Taste of the wild. if this doesn't work try Royal Canin, most cats love it and it is still much better than Whiskas.

Congratulations on your new kitten Una! Since Una is a picky eater, you may want to buy food from pet stores that offer a money back offer for food if a pet doesn't like it. I believe Petsmart may offer such a policy but you should double check that. Foods I have found that pets tend to like are Royal Canin and Purina ProPlan. She looks like a healthy little kitten, so I think she's probably OK and just being picky. If possible, I would contact the former caregiver and see what they were feeding. Sometimes they reject food that they are not familiar with. If you've done that already, or it is not possible, then try to feed a few different foods. She is old enough that she can eat 100% kitten food, so you can buy a few different cans of food at the pet store. Fancy feast is always a favorite. Don't feed too much at one time though, or she could develop vomiting/diarrhea. They also stop eating sometimes when they are feeling sick. If you notice some eye or nose discharge, or anything else concerning, then you may need to get her to a vet for evaluation. I hope that helps.
