Why does my pregnant cat's tail smell bad and hurt to touch?

It is hard to see clearly the extent of this lesion as the photo is a bit blurry. It definitely looks like an infected skin lesion....whether it started as a ruptured abscess, a traumatic wound or other...I cannot say for sure. This should be seen by your veterinarian as soon as possible for proper treatment which should include a prescription antibiotic and wound cleaning. If it needs surgical debrisement, make sure the doctor is aware of the pregnancy. Hopefully it can just be cleaned without any sedation, but medication is going to be needed to treat the infection. There are numerous antibiotics that are safe for pregnant cats.

Unfortunately, only an x-ray or a bone sticking out of the skin will tell you if it is broken. Tail injuries can be very serious, even if there is not a broken bone. Since they are very far away from the body, there is less blood flow that creates a condition for poor healing. I would strongly recommend seeing a vet. Depending on the amount of skin that is damaged, the vet may recommend amputation of the damaged part of the tail to help with healing. If you choose to treat at home, you need to try to clip the hair away from the wound so it can stay clean. You will need to prevent all licking, since this will delay healing and spread bacteria. You should clean it 2-3 times per day with water and a mild chlorhixidine wound soap. You can apply neosporin after cleaning the wound. Do not use alcohol or peroxide.

It does appear that she has a wound on her tail, either from the original injury or from something unrelated. It is difficult to tell from the picture whether or not the wound is extensive enough to need stitches, but it may need antibiotics to help prevent infection. I would recommend she be re-evaluated by her veterinarian to assess the severity of the wound, and if further treatment and/or antibiotics may be needed for it to heal. Good luck!

The other spot was probably there at the same time but due to the fur covering the small puncture wound you did not see it. These wounds became infected and now that they are open the infection will drain out and they will heal. These are commonly due to cat bites or scratches. I clean them with peroxide and keep the scab off so the discharge can drain. If they are in an area the cat can’t lick I use a thin film of antibacterial ointment on them. A flea allergy often causes irritation at the tail base or top of the tail. It could be some other cause of inflammation as well, but I would recommend that you start her on a good monthly flea product if she's not already on something. Also, put an e-collar on her to prevent her from licking at it; and if its not improving within a few days, arrange for her to see a vet. This looks like is may be a bite wound abscess that ruptured. Ideally, it should be addressed by your veterinarian. Surgery may be indicated to clean and flush the wound. Antibiotics and pain medication may also be indicated. Place an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent licking until he sees the doctor. You may need to confine him indoors until he is healed.
