My pregnant cat is in heat. Is it normal? Will rough play harm kittens?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Siamese | Female | unspayed | 6 lbs

I rescued a cat and when I got her blood test the vet said she was pregnant. She is a small cat now, not showing much, but has been in heat off and on for about 2 weeks. Is it that common for queens to go in heat while pregnant and when does it stop before delivery? Also my neutered male cat is sympathetic, though can't do much, and sometimes plays with her kinda rough. Will their rough play damage the kittens that she is carrying?

Pregnant cats do not go into heat. I would recommend having her re-evaluated by the vet to make sure she is pregnant and that she isn't having a false pregnancy or a pyometra (a potentially life-threatening infection of the uterus). Rough play shouldn't affect unborn kittens. They are well-protected in there!
