Why are my Persian cat's paws turning brown? Should I be worried?

It could be a normal color change, a bacterial or fungal skin infection, or from saliva staining from licking the area too much (allergies). Have your vet take a look at it to determine if there is anything abnormal that needs to be treated. If she doesn't seemed bothered by it and you don't see any swelling, redness, or discharge than it may just be normal.

It could also be a yeast or fungal infection. I would take Toffee to her veterinarian to have the paws looked and the brown cursing tested to rule out a bacterial or fungal infection. This brownish discoloration of the skin and hair is usually caused by saliva staining - the saliva has chemical compounds in it that turn brown when exposed to air. Most of the time, when a dog's paws look like this, it's a sign that they have been licking or chewing their paws excessively. It's likely that Rocky has allergies causing this problem - either food allergies, or an allergy to something in the environment. I would recommend taking him to the vet to have this checked when you're able to, so that he can get started on appropriate treatment to keep him from continuing to chew at his paws. Once he stops licking and chewing, the brown staining will gradually resolve on its own. In the meantime, you can also try a whitening dog shampoo to see if this helps - this probably won't completely get rid of the stains, but may help to make them less noticeable.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The tan on the pink part of his paws in normal callus formation over time. In dogs with black paws it is less obvious. The brown discoloration in the nails usually indicates a yeast infection of the nails. If he isn't licking the feet or having any problems you may not have to do anything for the yeast. Due to the Persian being a brachycephalic breed ("smoosh-face"), it is not uncommon for them to develop brown discoloration or crusting in the facial fold above their nose. The most important part of the daily routine for Billu is to clean the facial fold. This can be done by using a warm, moist cloth to remove debris build-up. If the area ever appears red, painful, or has a discharge or odor then it could possibly be infected. When this occurs it is best to have them evaluated by a veterinarian so that a medicated cleansing wipe can be prescribed to help decrease the occurrence in the future.

Based on your photos, this looks like pigmented areas of the paw pad, which can be normal in some cats. If the areas are not raised or painful then this is likely the case. If, however, the colored areas are a different texture/raised or seem painful/sensitive then a veterinary exam is recommended.

Most cats have clear/white claws but occasionally they can be darker. This can be from natural pigment or a response to inflammation or infection. If you see brown waxy discharge around the nail that is turning the nail brown, this can be a sign of an infection. If this is the case, a veterinarian should evaluate her to see if there is an infection.
