Why is my old diabetic cat vomiting and yowling like she's in pain?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 17 years and 5 months old | 14 lbs

My 17 year old cat was diagnosed with diabetes 5 years ago, and subsequently takes insulin shots 2 times a day of 3 units each. for a couple of weeks she has been throwing up at least once a day - it is just either clear liquid or mucous. For the past few nights she will start at night and go for long periods of yowling - a loud mournful cry. I try to get her to stop but can't. She loves to talk to me, but this is different, like a cry of pain.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Callie. She will need to see her veterinarian for an evaluation and likely some laboratory work. There is a common condition in cats known as hyperthyroidism. It frequently causes increased vocalizations. It can also cause vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss as well as an increased thirst and urination. This is my first suspicion based on your description of her. Of course, there are other possibilities and this is why she will need to see her veterinarian. I hope this information helps!
