My old cat eats fast, vomits, is aggressive. Is it hyperthyroidism?

Poor Tigger! It sounds like she has multiple things going on. I am worried that she may have hyperthroidism (too high thyroid) which is making her eat really fast/ravenously and causing her to vomit. The head bobbing could be due to this or another issue like diabetes, kidney disease and much more. I strongly recommend to have her checked out by your vet. Your vet can check her bloodwork to figure out the problems and get her started on the proper meds to help her feel better and stop the vomiting. I hope this helps!

The main suspicion would be hyperthyroidism, he is showing all the symptoms, you need to take him to the vet ASAP in order to have a blood test done that should confirm this, then your vet can start him on a treatment for this condition (fully treatable).

These sudden changes in temperament and the weight loss are commonly due to an endocrine problem called hyperthyroidism. The thyroid starts working more than normal increasing the metabolism (that is the cause of the weight loss) and causing behavioural changes similar to what you described. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm this clinical suspicion and treat appropriately. A blood test and urine analysis are needed. Thank you for your post! I am sorry to hear Shurbee is not doing well. My concern at this age would be some type of malignancy. In older cats, one of the more common things we see in regards to cancer is intestinal / GI lymphoma. This does not always show up on blood work. Tests such as thyroid hormone levels (T4 and free T4) can be performed to rule out hyperthyroidism and chronically elevated glucose levels would be determined with a fructosamine level test. These are done with a blood sample, but are not routinely performed. I would also be happy to look at any test results you have for Dylan and provide a second opinion.

Hi, I can see Taco is underweight cat with very increased appetite and aggressive to food and the age can be 2-12 yrs old, one of the first differential to check would be Hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is a common disease in cats, BUT it mostly affects cats that are middle-aged and older. Hyperthyroidism is caused by an increase in production of thyroid hormones from an enlarged thyroid gland in a cat’s neck. The most common clinical signs are weight loss (very thin cat), increased appetite, and increased thirst and urination. Hyperthyroidism may also cause vomiting, diarrhea, vocalization, ungroomed matted coat and hyperactivity. Diagnosis will require in most cases physical examination, blood chemistry panel including thyroid hormone levels and urinalysis. Since hyperthyroidism can predispose the cat to other conditions, it is important to evaluate also the heart (Heart rate and blood pressure) and the kidneys ( seen in the blood panel and urinalysis). Differential diagnoses for cats with clinical signs similar to hyperthyroidism should also include: diabetes mellitus, gastro intestinal malabsorption/maldigestion, neoplasia (especially gastrointestinal lymphosarcoma), chronic kidney disease (CKd) and parasitism.
