My old cat is suddenly very hungry and aggressive. What's wrong?

There are two very common health issues in older cats that are known for causing a sudden increase in appetite like this: hyperthyroidism, and diabetes. I would definitely recommend taking Lucy to the vet for a check-up when you are able to - he/she can do blood work to check for these problems. If she does have one of these illnesses, they are normally very treatable with medication once a diagnosis is made :)

Sorry you are having some troubles with Monster! I recommend that you take him to your vet for a senior blood panel. They can check his thyroid as well. Hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid gland) is not uncommon in older cats and can lead to behavioral changes, more vocalization, eating more, acting odd. Get him in for bloodwork when you can! In a situation like this where your pet is always seemingly hungry and eating other pets food, you want to first rule out any underlying disorder that can cause an increase in appetite, including Diabetes Mellitus. I would first get some baseline bloodwork done at your local vet to do a good overall health check. Then if she comes up clear for any underlying condition, I would recommend getting her on a food that is going to make her feel fuller longer. While some cats exhibit bad behavior by getting into food, an excessive appetite can also be indicative of a health problem such as diabetes or hyperthyroidism. I would recommend having him examined by your veterinarian and discuss other signs of these diseases such as weight loss or changes and drinking habits. Your veterinarian may recommend blood work to further screen for these diseases. If Phoenix is otherwise healthy this could just be a behavior problem. If this is the case you have taken the first step by limiting his access to the food items. Providing enrichment for him on a daily basis may help as well. This can be done by using puzzle toys to provide his meals as well as using a laser pointer other toys to encourage exercise. There are other options for deterring unwanted behavior such as a scat mat but this type of deterrence only works if used consistently and in all locations.

Tests such as thyroid hormone levels (T4 and free T4) can be performed to rule out hyperthyroidism and chronically elevated glucose levels would be determined with a fructosamine level test. Hi, I can see Taco is underweight cat with very increased appetite and aggressive to food and the age can be 2-12 yrs old, one of the first differential to check would be Hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is a common disease in cats, BUT it mostly affects cats that are middle-aged and older. Hyperthyroidism is caused by an increase in production of thyroid hormones from an enlarged thyroid gland in a cat’s neck. The most common clinical signs are weight loss (very thin cat), increased appetite, and increased thirst and urination. Hyperthyroidism may also cause vomiting, diarrhea, vocalization, ungroomed matted coat and hyperactivity. Diagnosis will require in most cases physical examination, blood chemistry panel including thyroid hormone levels and urinalysis. Since hyperthyroidism can predispose the cat to other conditions, it is important to evaluate also the heart (Heart rate and blood pressure) and the kidneys ( seen in the blood panel and urinalysis). Differential diagnoses for cats with clinical signs similar to hyperthyroidism should also include: diabetes mellitus, gastro intestinal malabsorption/maldigestion, neoplasia (especially gastrointestinal lymphosarcoma), chronic kidney disease (CKd) and parasitism. I would recommend to take Taco to your vet for examination and investigation.

As he is already 11 i would suspect a condition called hyperthyroidism, the main symptoms is constant hunger. you will need to take him to the vet to get it tested, a medical treatment is available for this condition.
