Why is my overweight cat constantly hungry, aggressive, and peeing outside the box?

It is more likely she is bored rather than hungry. You should do some environmental enrichment for her and I would also suggest you get an automatic feeder that will dispense food every few hours (her daily amount broken up into multiple smaller feedings through the day). I am assuming she is favoring wet food because it has more water in it and she is having a medical problem causing her dehydration. this could be caused by diabetes for example, but there could be other causes to that such as a chronic urinary condition. she needs to get to the vet as diagnosis in her condition is the key, she will need a blood test, i believe it should revile the problem.

Hi there. If Buddy is older and this is a new behavior then I suspect he could have an underlying health issue. It is very common in cats to get some diseases as they age. The two that come to mind right away are hyperthyroidism (elevated thyroid level) and diabetes. Both can cause a cat to be very hungry which makes them impatient when it comes to eating. These diseases are easily diagnosed with simple blood testing. So, I suggest you get Buddy to your vet for an exam and some blood testing as soon as you can. There are two very common health issues in older cats that are known for causing a sudden increase in appetite like this: hyperthyroidism, and diabetes. I would definitely recommend taking Lucy to the vet for a check-up when you are able to - he/she can do blood work to check for these problems. If she does have one of these illnesses, they are normally very treatable with medication once a diagnosis is made :)

Hello. This could be a behavioral issue, or possibly a medical one. There are some intestinal disturbances that can cause extreme appetite in cats. If this is behavioral, sometimes using the anti-anxiety medication amitryptiline, can quiet some of these extreme urges. But before getting into tests & possible medications, you might try switching your cat to a canned diet. It has been shown that some cats have a longer satiety response with wet diets. You can still offer hard food, but possibly offering this in puzzles can help. Kitty Kongs & treat balls slowly release food as a cat interacts with the toy. Homemade options like milk cartons & carboard rolls with taped ends & holes punched out to retrieve treats can keep your kitties mind busy. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Esther. It would be a good idea for her to see her veterinarian for laboratory work to ensure there is a not a disease causing her increased appetite. There are several that affect older cats causing hunger. If she is healthy, then it is a behavioral issue. Cats prefer to eat small frequent meals throughout the day. This will satisfy their needs better. You can divide her total calories for the day into 8 or so small meals. So maybe feed her several teaspoons of food many times during the day instead of just two main meals for her. This will allow you to control her calories while still meeting her needs. Hi, I can see Taco is underweight cat with very increased appetite and aggressive to food and the age can be 2-12 yrs old, one of the first differential to check would be Hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is a common disease in cats, BUT it mostly affects cats that are middle-aged and older. Hyperthyroidism is caused by an increase in production of thyroid hormones from an enlarged thyroid gland in a cat’s neck. The most common clinical signs are weight loss (very thin cat), increased appetite, and increased thirst and urination. Hyperthyroidism may also cause vomiting, diarrhea, vocalization, ungroomed matted coat and hyperactivity. Diagnosis will require in most cases physical examination, blood chemistry panel including thyroid hormone levels and urinalysis. Since hyperthyroidism can predispose the cat to other conditions, it is important to evaluate also the heart (Heart rate and blood pressure) and the kidneys ( seen in the blood panel and urinalysis). Differential diagnoses for cats with clinical signs similar to hyperthyroidism should also include: diabetes mellitus, gastro intestinal malabsorption/maldigestion, neoplasia (especially gastrointestinal lymphosarcoma), chronic kidney disease (CKd) and parasitism.
