Why is my senior cat suddenly aggressive, attacking, and needy?

Hi there. If Buddy is older and this is a new behavior then I suspect he could have an underlying health issue. It is very common in cats to get some diseases as they age. The two that come to mind right away are hyperthyroidism (elevated thyroid level) and diabetes. Both can cause a cat to be very hungry which makes them impatient when it comes to eating. These diseases are easily diagnosed with simple blood testing. So, I suggest you get Buddy to your vet for an exam and some blood testing as soon as you can. Certainly personalities can change as cats get older, but i would recommend making sure there isn't a medical explanation for her behavior. We see conditions like hyperthyroidism (a high thyroid level) which can cause increased activity as one of its first signs. Sometimes this type of behavior that comes on suddenly can be due to an underlying medical condition such as hyperthyroidism. Your veterinarian can test Tabs blood to see if his thyroid levels are high and if so, recommend appropriate treatment.

If this is a recent change in behavior I'd recommend having your veterinarian perform a thorough physical examination as a first step. Some common diseases in older cats like hyperthyroidism can make them much grumpier than usual. Pain from arthritis can also make cats react in an aggressive way. If your veterinarian feels there is no medical reason for the behavior change I would then recommend talking to a feline behavior specialist to see if there are changes you can make at home to address this behavior. Cat bites are no joke - veterinarians have lost fingers due to infected cat bites and cellulitis! But it sounds like there could be some other things to look into before deciding on euthanasia.

I'm glad to hear that Rosie overall seems to be fairly normal despite her vocalizations. Changes in vocalization can occur to a number of reasons, including endocrine/metabolic diseases (such as hyperthyroidism), cognitive dysfunction, hypertension (high blood pressure), neurologic conditions or as a sign of pain. If Rosie's vocalization continues, consider taking her back to the vet for blood tests and blood pressure measurement to try to rule out other underlying issues. I hope that all goes well!
