My old cat is restless and meows at night. How can I help her?

He there. I would recommend a natural product called Feliway. They have an awesome website about cats and stress. http://www.feliway.com/us/#redirected Their product is basically "happy cat pheromones " that is very calming to cats. These products work great! I would certainly give it a shot. If it doesn't help you may want to take him to a vet for an exam. Older cats can have medical issues that can cause discomfort. I hope this helps. Best wishes!

Hi and thanks for posting! Aww poor Fanny- I like that name and cute picture of her. If the calming supplements do not seem to do the trick after a while and Fanny is still seeming stressed, then I would talk to Fanny's veterinarian about getting her on anti anxiety medication. There are lots of different medications your veterinarian may recommend. It may take 3-4 weeks to see any differences in her behavior, but this can really help especially if all other efforts have proven to be unsuccessful. Miss Sassy may be suffering from Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome, or in other words, be a bit senile. This causes her to all of a sudden not knowing where she is , feeling all alone or left behind. You can leave on a radio over night or a light or both and this may help. If not , there are medications that can be given such as selegiline (Anipryl, off license for cats) which will help . It sounds as though Bella may have some signs of developing dementia. Just like humans, elderly pets can develop dementia. The treatment for this is a behavioral modifying drug, like trazadone. Hello. What you're describing is not uncommon among older cats. It could indicate the type of cognitive dysfunction, vision issues, or even other neurological issues. The dose for alprazolam and other sedatives can range very greatly as well as depend on underlying conditions your cat may have. Generally speaking animals have a higher metabolic rate the smaller they are so smaller animals often require higher dosages of certain medications the bigger animals such as us. Unfortunately we are not legally allowed to approve dosages for any medications we did not prescribe as your veterinarian. However if you contact your veterinarian they may be able to give you verbal authorization for a dose.

That’s a tough one! I don’t think the vet would think you are wasting their time as it’s always beneficial to have a physical exam and I think in Stinky Pete’s case, it would be beneficial. Hyperthyroidism can cause increased activity and increased vocalizing and is common in older cats. Older cats can also get dementia which presents the same way. Lastly, older pets can be more prone to anxiety, just like older humans. The vet may test the thyroid and go from there based upon the results. Many of these cats will get sedatives at night if anxiety is suspected. You could also try a pheromone diffuser called Feliway.
