My old cat is lethargic, won't stand, and has crusty nose. What to do?

I am sorry to hear about Luna. Since she is lethargic and has a decreased appetite, I would recommend she have an examination by her vet. Depending on her age, different diseases are more likely. Kittens are prone to respiratory tract infections and as well severe GI infections. Middle age cats are more likely to develop thyroid disorders, while older cats tend to suffer kidney problems. Of course there are other possibilities as well. Blood work and urine testing are common diagnostic tests. Her veterinarian will decide on testing and treatment options based on her exam findings. I hope this information helps!

Without images it is very difficult to assess what may be going on. It would be worthwhile getting a second opinion but a tumour in the mouth or sinuses may well be affecting the drainage from her eyes or nose and may be contributing to the signs you can see, an the smell you describe is likely related to an infection or damaged tissue. A sedated oral exam and xrays or CT scan would help to investigate everything that may be happening, including tear production and drainage which may be contributing to the crusts and blood shot eyes

Poor Garfield. At age 17 that is an awful lot going on and I'd be worried there is an underlying issue such as kidney or organ failure, disease, etc. Since he's so old and is having so many symptoms, it's best to bring him to your vet ASAP. They will likely want to run a few tests such as bloodwork or an X-ray to check his organ function, etc. If you can, bringing in urine or stool samples can also help with any testing and help streamline the process. Until you can get the vet, keeping him as comfortable as possible and keeping his eyes and nose clear with a clean washcloth can help. Some cats also do better eating if they can smell the food, so warming up his food or adding some boiled chicken that is smelly may encourage him to eat a little until you can be seen.

Being so young, he can dehydrated easily if he does not eat and drink properly. He may be experiencing an upper respiratory tract infection. See if he has any eye or nose discharge as well as any sneezing. Gastrointestinal infections can cause him to not feel well and are usually accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea. Finally, if he sustained an injury he could have the symptoms you reported as well. His veterinarian will be able to differentiate between these causes. I hope this information helps!

Based on what you are describing, I would recommend having Nino evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Extreme lethargy in a cat can be due to a variety of reasons (infection, pain, urinary obstruction, GI issues, etc) and the underlying cause for what you are seeing would need to be identified in order to get him feeling better. Your cat needs to see the veterinarian today. The weight loss and lethargy are concerning for many conditions including kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, diabetes or cancer. Other causes are also possible. Many of these conditions can be managed if caught early. The veterinarian will need to check from blood and urine test results. I hope this helps.
