My old cat is lethargic. Is it arthritis from the rain? Can I give Onsior?

I'm sorry to hear that Elijah is limping and painful! Unfortunately, I don't think it's advisable to give him the Onsior that you have on hand without having first checked his bloodwork to assess his kidney values. Cats are very sensitive to pain medications, particularly NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like Onsior, so they should only be given when specifically prescribed for the incident at hand. Aspirin (like Bufferin) is highly toxic to cats and should not be given under any circumstances. Since he seems so uncomfortable, it would be ideal to take him to an ER this weekend for more urgent evaluation. The ER vet will be able to prescribe pain medication for him. If the Onsior isn't expired and is the appropriate dosing for his current weight then you can give him a tablet. Do not give it if he isn't eating or is vomiting. Do not give extra and follow the specific instructions, once daily for no more than 3 days. Call your Vet Monday before giving anymore. Good luck!

This is not a typical side effect to onsior. I would have her reassessed to see if she might require additional pain management or if there is an infection currently brewing that needs addressing. If the breathing actually becomes labored or distressed, have her checked immediately. Hope this helps.

Sorry to hear about Mr. President. He may have an adverse effect from the Onsior, but is difficult to tell without knowing all of the previous history. I would expect a cat that is hurt to be less active and eat less, but if this was not a problem prior to the vet visit, then I would seriously question the treatment given. Onsior can cause adverse effects to the stomach and small intestines; which can lead to a lack of appetite, vomiting and gastrointestinal ulcers. I am concerned that the vomit was pink, because this can possibly be due to bleeding. However, bleeding in the stomach is usually seen as black, coffee-ground-like specs, so this is not typical of an ulcer. It's best to take a picture of the vomit (if you still can), so you can show your vet. I would recommend you have him rechecked by your vet within the next day to ensure everything is OK. They can help determine if anything different needs to be done. In the meantime, make sure to give food and water as normal and don't attempt to give any treatments without a veterinarian's direction. I hope that helps and Mr. President gets better soon.

Unfortunately, there aren't any over the counter medications that are safe for pain in cats. Even Tylenol could be deadly. My concern is that this may not be arthritis. Arthritis can be hard to diagnose in cats, and is often underdiagnosed, because they are so good at hiding the symptoms. Other disease processes, like kidney disease, liver disease, or masses in the abdomen can also cause similar symptoms. I would recommend saving up some money to have Lil Miss examined by a vet.

Fortunately Onsior is one of the safest pain killers on the market and a one time double dosage is not likely to affect him. i would still monitor him for vomiting, lack of appetite and bloody stools, i would also recommend skipping the next dose.

Clopidogrel and Onsior are safe to give at the same time, as long as they are medications that are both prescribed by your veterinarian to be used by Jack. Onsior is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication that should not be used if cats have underlying liver or kidney disease, as Onsior can make these diseases worse. If the Onsior has been prescribed by your veterinarian for Jack (and not a different cat in the house) it is OK to give him this along with the Clopidogrel he usually receives. If the Onsior has been prescribed for a different cat in the household, I would not give this to Jack without Jack first being evaluated by your veterinarian. I hope this is helpful!
