Old cat has ingrown nail. Is it serious? Can I treat at home?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 13 years and 9 months old

Hi my cat has this huge nail growing into his paw. He is terrified of car rides and is old. Is there something I can do at home for this? What has caused this to grow like this and it is serious? He's not limping or showing any signs of being in pain. Many thanks Alina

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach, Alina! I can see that James has an ingrown claw on one of his paw pads. This can be painful and result in infections of the paw pad which can be very serious. Unfortunately, James should be seen by a vet for this, because when the nail is cut the tissue that it punctured can bleed profusely. There are vets who do house calls, so you may want to search for one in your area. I hope this helps and that all is well with James!
