My cat cut his paw pad. Can I treat it at home or is a vet needed?

My cat Bobbi has cut his foot pad. It looks bad however he isn't really limping, he is still acting his usual self and doesn't seem to be in pain. I'm in a difficult financial situation and can only pay for vet fees if it's absolutely necessary but is there anything I can do for my cat to help? Will it heal itself? Or do I need to take him to vet?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. The cut appears to be all of the way through the paw pad on the affected foot. I would suggest having this wound looked at by your vet if you can so that Bobbi can receive antibiotics and receive proper treatment. However, if you are unable to get to your vet, you could try and keep the foot clean using a diluted Betadine solution (mix Betadine with saline to get a weak brown tea color) and use this to clean the Wound. I would then switch to a different litter such as yesterday's news so that he is not getting fine litter sand in the wound. I would monitor the area for signs of swelling and discharge as this is going to be highly prone to infection. If you notice any signs of infection I would get him to your vet as soon as possible.     Poor Kaneki! He does sound painful if he's holding his paw up when sitting and limping (limping is a sign of pain in cats). I would gently clean the paw with warm water and an antiseptic soap. Do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to cats and are fatal if given. I would keep him indoors until the cut is healed, as going outside will cause it to get dirty and infected. I would not put any topical ointment on it either unless you have an Ecollar to keep him from licking it. Although quite safe on superficial wounds, cats groom and ingest most of the topical ointment you apply and therefore should be used only under direct veterinary supervision and if there are no other appropriate options. Many human ointments contain multiple other ingredients which are not necessarily safe to be swallowed.

    If the cut is deep, then it will need sutures to fix. Kaneki will have to see a vet then to have it sutured closed. If paying for a vet is an issue, you can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Carefree Credit online.

    If it isn't too deep, you can treat it as I suggested above, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see signs of redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and he will need to see a vet right away.

You can switch out her litter to something such as Yesterday's News so that it is not painful to walk on. I would also apply a topical ointment such as Sentry wound cream (can be found at Petco) and apply twice daily for 3-5 days. This should heal fine on its own. If you begin to notice swelling of the foot or pus coming from the area, then I would take her in to be seen by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. My cat is limping with a bleeding paw sore. Does he need a vet?
Hi, in the first picture it looks like there could be a bit of infection as the fluid seems cloudy. Looking at the second one the skin lesion looks more like podo dermatitis, an inflammation of Jeff's pad. I think it is worthy to have hm checked over, in order to get some medications and help him towards a speedy recovery. If you don't take him to see your vet, his foot will continue to get worse and every time he puts his foot down to walk he will be in a lot of pain. I think your vet will not need to run tests but just give him some medications and therefore cost should be limited. My friend's cat has a scraped paw. Can I treat it without a vet?
You can certainly clean this by taking some gauze that has mild soap and warm water in it a scrub it, not too vigorously but enough to get it clean. This should help, and then placing an e-collar will also keep him from licking it, which will cause infection. However, before you consider this course of action I would strongly recommend that you contact his owners to make sure that they are ok with you choosing to treat this at home. He is their cat, and they may wish to have him seen. Also be aware that this may be painful and you may have difficultly getting him to submit to your treatments. Finally, if he is having other systemic signs of illness, such as lethargy or decreased appetite, you’ll need to go ahead and take him in.

My cat's paw pad is hanging off. What immediate care can I give?
That’s sounds painful. The pad that’s hanging off will not heal back. I recommend a veterinary visit where they can give your cat some pain medication and sedation so they can trim off part of the pad. He may need a paw bandage and antibiotics also. This may take several weeks to fully heal. This would be difficult to treat at home. You can try soaking the foot in warm water with epsoms salt, or dilute antibacterial solution, twice a day, until you can get him to your veterinarian. He will need to be seen by a vet of course as he must be given antibiotics and pain killers, but in the meantime you can clean the area, put some antiseptic or antibiotic cream on it and bandage it. i understand it will not be easy nut this is the only thing you can do to help him without seeing a vet.

This wound appears to be superficial so your initial decontamination with the warm water and soaking it in epsom salt should be enough. I would recommend keeping a close eye on this and making sure the foot does not become swollen and that there is no pus coming from the wound. You can soak the foot in epsom salt solution twice daily until this is healed. If Duke is going to be going outside in the dirt I would recommend putting a booty over his foot or a sock to prevent dirt from getting inside the wound. If there are any changes that indicate infection, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Duke so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Sometimes they can be closed, other times bandaging may be best. Ideally wounds should be addressed as quickly as possible to allow for optimal healing. Waiting another day may make closing the wound impossible if it's an option. Make sure that Moose cannot lick the wound, this may require an e-collar (lampshade cone of shame). If it is painful or continuing to bleed he should be seen tonight.
