Newborn kittens: brown liquid, small runt, crying, sleeping. Is this normal?

Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. They probably got it from the mother. I recommend that you have them evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. The best thing you can do is to weigh her twice daily to make sure she's growing appropriately. Kittens should gain 10% of their birth weight per week, or if you don't know the birth weight you should make sure the kitten is gaining weight each day and not losing weight. If she is not gaining weight it would be a good idea to see a vet for an exam and potentially to supplement with bottle feeding.

Newborn poop can look like this and can normally be different colors and consistency. They eventually have more normal appearing stools after 2-4 weeks. Hi, thanks for using Petcoach! I am sorry that you are going through this! It is common for mother cats to move their kittens, especially if stressed and they feel that their kittens are at risk. I wold try to leave her be and try not to stress her. You can check on the babies once-twice a day. Her laying on them is some what normal. Unfortunately there is no way for me to tell based on the picture if the kitten will survive. Sadly some kittens don't make it and we don't know why. It is called "fading kitten syndrome." If Tinkiee left him/her behind she may know it is sick. You can try to hand raise the kitten by bottle feeding it with Kitten Mild Replacer (KMR). You have to bottle feed it every 3 hours and stimulate it to urinate and defecate by gently wiping it's anus and genitals with warm wash cloth after feedings. Below is a link to the milk replacer. It looks like the one kitten may have a little diarrhea, which isn’t too concerning as long as the kittens are nursing well, gaining weight, and the stools form up a bit in a day or two. The black hard stool can be normal for the first stool passed, but I would keep a close eye on momma to make sure she is cleaning the kittens well. One of the best ways to make sure all kittens are thriving is to weigh them daily using a gram scale - they should gain every day.

Some variation in bowel movements can be normal especially in very young still maturing animals. However, I would monitor your kitten closely and ensure she is nursing frequently from her mother. The hard feces could be a sign of dehydration. Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You should offer a small amount of food about 3-4 times daily and in really small kittens, every few hours might be needed. Eliminations and the frequency thereof, are dependent on many things depending on food intake, type of food, water intake etc. As long as she is not straining and trying to poop, it could be up to another 24-36 hours. She is getting accustomed to her new and that is probably slowing up the fecal elimination process. Again, no straining to have a bowel movement usually means that everything is ok, especially if the kitten is eating and drinking normally. Just keep monitoring for a bowel movement and monitor behavior, appetite, etc. If things change and you are unsure have your veterinarian evaluate the kitten. I hope everything works out ok.
