New kitten parent? What are the best tips for raising them right?

It can be easy to get caught up in the new puppy cuteness, while forgetting that your job as a new pet owner is to raise your little bundle of fluff into a well-mannered, properly socialized and trained adult dog. Good for you for being ahead of the game! The first thing to remember is to set boundaries now by only allowing your puppy to do things now that you also want them to do as an adult. For example, if you don’t want to have your dog on the couch as an adult, don’t allow them on the couch as a puppy. Teaching basic leash skills and focusing on crate training will also be important to start from the very beginning. The key to having a well-adjusted dog is to socialize them from an early age. Once finishing your puppy’s vaccine series, be sure to expose them to a variety of different people, other dogs, noises and environments. Puppy classes can be a useful arena for socialization as well as learning basic training commands. Puppies also require frequent visits to the veterinarian, particularly in the first four months of life, for physical exams, weight checks and vaccinations. During these visits, your veterinarian will be able to discuss the best preventative medications for your puppy, as well as the benefits of spaying and neutering, and proper nutrition.

1) Get a kitten, that is at least 12 weeks old. That way it had time to socialize and playfight with its siblings and Mama had time to teach it everything it needs to know to be a good kitty. 2) Feed it good quality brand name complete kitten food 3) Put the water dish at least 5 ft away from the food dish 4) Kitten toys: lots of crinkly paper balls are a great toy for kittens, a feather on a long string and a rod....you can "fish" for your kitty.... 5)Get a comb and a brush and start combing your kitty regularly so it gets used to it and learns to like it. Ragdolls can have problems with matted hair if not combed regularly. 6) Get hair ball remedy just in case 7) Give it LOTS of love. The more love you give your kitty, the more love you get back. Be prepared to ba climbing tree for your kitty....it is normal 8) Get a scratch box for it so it learns to use it and stays away from furniture 9) Please do not have your kitty declawed. Declawing is amputation of the last bone in its fingers and is not necessary and barbaric, can cause lifelong pain and leaves your cat without a way of defending herself.

Kittens are so easy to care for! I have included an article below that will help. Litter box training is usually learned within a day or two. Just put Ares in the litterbox several times throughout the day. They usually figure it out quickly. Make sure he has plenty of toys to play with and tall scratching posts. They like to use the post when you are around as a social behavior so try to put the post near a common living area like the living room or bedroom. He can have kitten hard food now and you can give him a tablespoon of canned food once a day if you wish. If he is a big eater, I wouldn't let him just free feed all day long as they will eventually become overweight this way. He should be eating about 1/2-3/4 cup of food a day right now. It sounds like you are on the right track! I would recommend bringing her into a vet soon if you haven't already, for her first checkup, deworming and round of shots (abandoned kittens that don't get mother's milk may need their first vaccination a bit earlier than usual since they don't have the antibodies they'd get from nursing). Introducing her to a litter box once she gets a little bit older is also a good next step, as well as starting her on a mash of solid food and milk replacer to start weaning her. If you're still having trouble with how to care for her, talking with your local humane society is a great idea- they often have orphaned kitten programs and may be able to offer a class or other help in helping Princess grow up healthy.

If Scout seems happy, don't feel pressured to get a second cat. Scout should go to a vet as soon as you can make an appointment as he is likely behind on vaccines/worming if he hasn't had any since you got him. Neuter is recommended at 6 months of age. Congratulations! What a beautiful kitten! Most vets start a vaccine series between 6-8 weeks of age, and will also deworm or check stool samples at the first visit. Following that, they typically need a visit/booster every 3-5 weeks until they are a few months old. The exact vaccines schedule will be individualized by your vet. They may also recommend parasite prevention or routine dewormers. Other things you can do at home include feeding a high quality kitten food, checking their urine and stool output and getting them used to being handled. Becoming well socialized is very important! Make sure they have plenty of vertical space like a cat tree, handle him gently and frequently - get him used to having his nail trims, etc. Don't let him bite you:) It looks like you are off to a great start!

You're going to need to be a little more specific than that! Based on that picture, your kitty is looking pretty comfortable! A six week old kitten should already be fully weaned and on its way to litter trained. Feed it a high quality kitten food, make sure it has a comfortable place to sleep, access to water at all times, some toys, and plenty of love. In terms of medical care, I would make sure it has been properly dewormed by taking a fecal sample into a vet to have it viewed microscopically. It should start getting its first series of vaccines at eight weeks. It can be rabies vaccinated by twelve weeks of age.
