I'm a first-time owner. What care does my 1-month-old kitten need?

It would be helpful to know how old your kitten might be - if it is very young the feeding and care are very different when compared to an older kitten that has already been weaned. I would recommend taking it to a veterinarian promptly to establish care and to make sure there aren't any health concerns since it was a stray kitten. Congrats on your graduation and your new kitten! First thing to do is have this kitten seen by a vet right away to confirm her age. Three weeks old is too young for her to be separated from her mother, and she won't be ready to be away from her mother until she is at least six to eight weeks of age. If possible, I would see if you can return her to her mother until she is old enough to be fully weaned. If you cannot take her back to her mother, then the vet can give you advice on how to bottle feed a kitten this young. Please be prepared that she will have to be bottle fed every two to three hours all day long. I will also put a link below to a website with advice on raising a kitten this young. She will not need shots just yet, she will not be old enough for them until she is at least six to eight weeks old. She likely doesn't need a bath, but you can use cat wipes if they are listed as safe for kittens. Otherwise you can bathe her in warm water and Dawn dish soap. Congratulations! What a beautiful kitten! Most vets start a vaccine series between 6-8 weeks of age, and will also deworm or check stool samples at the first visit. Following that, they typically need a visit/booster every 3-5 weeks until they are a few months old. The exact vaccines schedule will be individualized by your vet. They may also recommend parasite prevention or routine dewormers. Other things you can do at home include feeding a high quality kitten food, checking their urine and stool output and getting them used to being handled. Becoming well socialized is very important! Make sure they have plenty of vertical space like a cat tree, handle him gently and frequently - get him used to having his nail trims, etc. Don't let him bite you:) It looks like you are off to a great start!

If the kitten is this old you can introduce softened kitten food or canned kitten food and it will be ok away from mom. Make sure you schedule a vet visit to get her dewormed and checked out. She needs her first vaccines at 8 weeks.

Depending on her age, the kitten may not be able to break down the milk sugar called lactose much like people with Lactose Intolerance. I wouldn't advise giving milk since it can cause cramping, diarrhea, and gastrointestinal upset. I would advise getting her to your veterinarian right away for an examination. Depending on her age they will advise you on pertinent testing (Feline Leukemia, Feline Immunodeficiency Virus), vaccinations, and deworming to get her off on the right track. Poor Tim! If you can't find the mother, you will need to take care of Tim. Young kittens can require a lot of care initially. At his age, Tim can begin weaning. If he is healthy, he will eat out of low lipped bowls or plates. I recommend to get kitten formula, canned kitten food and dry (kibble kitten food). Set out a bowl of the plain dry kibble, a bowl of the canned kitten food and bowl of kibbled soaked in formula. You may need to smear the canned food and the soaked kibble around his mouth or even place a few small pieces in his mouth. Most kittens will begin eating this way. You're going to need to be a little more specific than that! Based on that picture, your kitty is looking pretty comfortable! A six week old kitten should already be fully weaned and on its way to litter trained. Feed it a high quality kitten food, make sure it has a comfortable place to sleep, access to water at all times, some toys, and plenty of love. In terms of medical care, I would make sure it has been properly dewormed by taking a fecal sample into a vet to have it viewed microscopically. It should start getting its first series of vaccines at eight weeks. It can be rabies vaccinated by twelve weeks of age.
