Is spraying diluted mint oil for mice safe for my new kittens?

Yes. Remove the peppermint oil and clean any spots where it was applied. Peppermint essential oil can be toxic or harmful to cats. Consider an electronic pest repeller and seal any holes or cracks that would allow rodents to enter. Steel wool can be used to prevent them from chewing through.

Cats are especially sensitive to peppermint oil, and if ingested, it can caused GI upset, central nervous system depression, and even liver damage if enough is ingested. I would not allow Kiki in your room at all at the moment, and to be safe, I would wash your bedding before allowing her back in. In the future, refrain from using peppermint oil.

Hello. Most recipes I have seen recommend using 5 drops of peppermint oil to 16 oz water & a dash of soap, so check to make sure 10 drops will not be too strong for you. Just fill the bottle 1/2 way, add the 10 drops & see how it smells. If too strong, just fill the bottle the rest of the way with water. I do not think this will be a problem to any of your cats as long as the spray has a chance to dry before letting your cats back into the room. You can use the stronger dilution outdoors with no issues, but indoors, check to see how your cats react in just one area after the spray has dried. As long as you don't spray it on the cats and you don't spray it while the cats are in the room it should be OK. Cats are EXTREMELY sensitive to essential oils and they can be toxic to them so be very careful. Likely this will work to deter them however, they may just pick another spot to pee on instead...... The biggest problem with essential oils is not the smell, but when the oil gets onto the cat and they lick it off. This can happen when the oil is aerosolized or if it is sprayed or poured and the cat walks through it since they will then lick their paws. So, if you have sprayed or poured the peppermint oil in an area that Luna may walk through, then make sure you wash the area well. The strong smell is mainly a concern if a cat has asthma and is not associated with the toxicity aspect of essential oils. There is not a large amount of peppermint oil in this spray, and water is the first ingredient, so that means the peppermint oil is diluted. This lessons any toxic effects. Because you wiped Storm's paws with water after he stepped in it, he should be just fine :-)

Unfortunately, peppermint does bother cats, and poses a significant health risk to them as well. They are very sensitive to it, and it can cause harmful effects to the GI system, central nervous system, and liver. I would not allow them to sleep on your bed until the smell of the oil is absorbed. I don't know if you can try to steam clean the box spring to get it out, but if you can, I would recommend doing that.
