My cat pees on my bed. Is peppermint oil safe to deter them?

Cats are especially sensitive to peppermint oil, and if ingested, it can caused GI upset, central nervous system depression, and even liver damage if enough is ingested. I would not allow Kiki in your room at all at the moment, and to be safe, I would wash your bedding before allowing her back in. In the future, refrain from using peppermint oil.

Unfortunately, peppermint does bother cats, and poses a significant health risk to them as well. They are very sensitive to it, and it can cause harmful effects to the GI system, central nervous system, and liver. I would not allow them to sleep on your bed until the smell of the oil is absorbed. I don't know if you can try to steam clean the box spring to get it out, but if you can, I would recommend doing that.

Yes. Remove the peppermint oil and clean any spots where it was applied. Peppermint essential oil can be toxic or harmful to cats. Consider an electronic pest repeller and seal any holes or cracks that would allow rodents to enter. Steel wool can be used to prevent them from chewing through.

The biggest problem with essential oils is not the smell, but when the oil gets onto the cat and they lick it off. This can happen when the oil is aerosolized or if it is sprayed or poured and the cat walks through it since they will then lick their paws. So, if you have sprayed or poured the peppermint oil in an area that Luna may walk through, then make sure you wash the area well. The strong smell is mainly a concern if a cat has asthma and is not associated with the toxicity aspect of essential oils. Hello. Most recipes I have seen recommend using 5 drops of peppermint oil to 16 oz water & a dash of soap, so check to make sure 10 drops will not be too strong for you. Just fill the bottle 1/2 way, add the 10 drops & see how it smells. If too strong, just fill the bottle the rest of the way with water. I do not think this will be a problem to any of your cats as long as the spray has a chance to dry before letting your cats back into the room. You can use the stronger dilution outdoors with no issues, but indoors, check to see how your cats react in just one area after the spray has dried. I would stop spraying the mint oil. Garden mint can cause GI upset if ingested, and mint oil is made from that. There are humane traps you can get to catch the mice so you can release them elsewhere. I recommend that method. I hope this helps!

I'm not sure that you're going to be able to find the information that you are looking for, because we're not quite sure what percentage of essential oils are safe for cats. Peppermint and clove oils are both potentially toxic for cats without an established "safe" amount. I can't recommend applying essential oils directly to the fur/skin of a cat because of the potential safety concerns.
