My male cat is acting like he's in heat. What's wrong and what to do?

Pet's info: Cat | British Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 9 months and 14 days old | 15.432 lbs

My 10 months male cat is in heat again. 3 months back he had the same problem and a neighborhood cat gave him company. But now I want a permanent solution. Are there any medicines to stop this procedure?

Hello. Male cats do not go into heat. That term refers to the estrus cycle of a female cat. Male cats that are not neutered are always ready to mate. If his behavior changes, he may simply be responding to a female cat that is in heat . The only way to stop his mating behavior is to have him neutered surgically. It is a simple procedure that you can discuss with your veterinarian.

Your female cat will only mate with your male when she is in heat. I suspect that the reason why she isn't mating with him is because she is not currently in heat. Female cats typically go into heat anywhere from six months of age, but for some cats, it can be closer to a year old. Even if you mate your male cat eventually, it's not going to stop the behavior he's showing for long because he will want to keep mating. The best thing to do is have him neutered to stop this behavior. You can make an appointment with your vet to have this done. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

Male cats don't have a heat cycle, however they typically have behavioral changes and make sounds any time they sense the presence of a nearby female in heat. You could have him examined by a vet to determine the exact cause. Having him neutered would stop the urge to mate.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Grey. Only female cats will come into heat so this would not be the case if you are sure he is a male. He could be reacting to unspayed female cats in the neighborhood though who are in heat. This can result in the symptoms you have described. Neutering him will help if this is the case. Cats will tend to have a recurring heat cycle until they are bred, so if she isn't yet pregnant, she is likely to continue to have interest in the male, and the male in her. Why is my neutered male cat suddenly acting strange and hiding?

It is not likely because of a female in heat. What you describe sounds more like he is running away from an itch or pain. Some cats act like that when they have fleas. If you are not doing flea prevention, it may be a good idea to do so. You may also want to check if there are any painful areas on his body (especially where he licks himself). Also check for flea poop (part the hair in the area near the base of the tail on his back and abdomen for little black specs). If you find little black specs of poop, flea prevention is in order. If you find an area that hurts him, you should take him to a veterinarian for an exam.
