My 4-week-old kitten's paw is undeveloped with only one claw. What to do?

Yes, I would discuss surgical removal with your vet. It is likely causing pain when he is walking. It will be interesting to see the x-ray of his paw! Simply trimming it down won't help much, he needs to have the nail and the associated bone removed to prevent continued growth.

The large central pad seems slightly bigger, maybe due to an injury. Other than that from the photo it looks normal. If she having pain or lameness then take her in for a veterinary exam and treatment. I expect the swelling to resolve in a few days if there was a mild injury. Hello and thank your contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It is hard to say what happened to the nail without seeing and examining it in person. I suspect the claw is shedding and the hanging bit is only a thin layer of the shedding claw. If that is the case, you should be able to gently pull it off with your fingers or clip it off with a nail clippers (you should clip the white part of the claw only). If the claw is broken close to the nail base, touching the toe will be painful to your cat and there will be usually blood around the nail. So, try very gently to pull off the hanging part of the claw. If it is causing pain or discomfort, most likely there is also some damage to the nail base and you may need to take your cat to your local vets to clip the nail very short to remove the damaged part.

If she is eating and isn't limping then it could be normal for her. If your neighbor is planning on adopting her and caring for her long term she will need a Vet visit to be dewormed, vaccinated and spayed. The Vet can check out the paw. I wish you the best!

It is necessary for the kitten to be examined and treated as it will not be able to walk properly on the front legs like this, making it prone to injuries and infections.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I strongly recommend taking the kitten to the vet. She may have an injury to that leg, or to her back. She may require x-rays if a fracture is suspected. in the meantime keep her confined to a small area such as a dog crate - room enough for sleeping, food, water and litter box but no running or playing. Do not give her any pain medications as many are toxic to cats.
