My new kitten has tiny oval bugs. Are they fleas? How to get rid?

Hello, if you can see them then they are likely fleas! You can give the cat a bath to rid the fleas. If you have other pets at home ensure they are all protected against fleas as well. Hope this helps and best of luck

Cute kitty. This is likely a flea and actually you can bathe kitty as early as 2 weeks of age, since that is when most kitties can regulate their own body temperature. Fleas are very small and move very fast. They can cause itching and also they can carry tapeworms which can come out in the stool and look like little grains of rice. And actually Pinky is old enough for topical Revolution flea prevention, which is ok to give to kitty’s who are at least 6 weeks of age. Ask your vet for a prescription, since this is not available over the counter. But you can go ahead and bathe Pinky now, just blow dry him a bit to speed up the drying process if it is cold temperature where you are. Cute kitty! These look like they could be flea larvae. You could give this kitty a bath using a mild cat shampoo and then apply a flea preventative. You also might want to have your veterinarian examine this kitten to make sure it is healthy in general and to discuss routine deworming and vaccines.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! From your pictures the black squiggly thing looks like "flea dirt" or flea poop. When you wet it on a white paper towel it melts to blood. They usually don't move though unless you had a flea. I would start a good flea preventative like Comfortis, Bravecto or the Seresto collar. They look like they could be tick nymphs but it’s difficult to tell since they’re far away in the picture. They don’t look like fleas or lice to me. Mites are microscopic. There are probably many, many other types of insects that do not infest cats that I’m not familiar with.

Hi and thanks for posting! The brown color may be a scab or scabbing around her legs and neck due to itching or licking frequently. It may be Sasha has an allergy to fleas (especially if she is not on any flea preventative), or has another allergy. Skin mites are also a possibility as is a fungal infection or bacterial infection. I would not try to remove the scab as the skin is trying to heal itself. I would recommend having Sasha seen by her veterinarian soon so a definitive diagnosis can be made and Sasha can receive the necessary treatments. From the photos, those look more like teats. Check the bumps to see if they are in pairs. Cats typically have 8-10 sets of teats (even the males). Use your flea comb to check for fleas. Fleas like to hang out the lower back and between the hind legs. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.
