What are these brown crusts on my kitten's legs and neck? Fleas?

This is most likely due to some type of allergy. Due to its location it is most likely fleas but could also be due to something else in the environment. I would make sure she is on a high quality flea preventative like comfortis, cheristan, or advantage. Also, if you see any fleas on her I would also treat your house and yard for fleas. Fleas do not live on the pet but in the environment. If you do not see any fleas and the spots are not improving, I would recommend to have your vet take a look at them. There is a good chance that the spot have become infected and she may need some antibiotics and stronger allergy meds like steroids to help them heal. I hope this helps!

These areas on the skin look very suspicious of a ringworm infection or bacterial infection. Ms Pussington needs to be seen by a vet to get this looked at and treated. This won't respond to any at home treatment unfortunately. I would recommend scheduling an appt soon for her. In the meantime you can try cleaning the area with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water to provide a topical antiseptic clean. Nothing else should be placed on these wounds. She will likely need a skin scrape/cytology to identify the underlying pathogen and then treatment based on what the cause is. I hope she feels better soon.

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Brown crusting on the paws could be foreign material on the paws such as dirt or feces. It could also be a yeast or fungal infection. I would take Toffee to her veterinarian to have the paws looked and the brown cursing tested to rule out a bacterial or fungal infection. Both are very treatable and not too much to worry about. Hope this helps!

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The scab can be a mass, matted fur, infection, or chronic wound. It is difficult to say exactly what it may be without a photo. If Twilight allows, you can use an electric clipper to remove the fur around the area to keep it clean and get a better look. If you think that the area is increasing in size, starts bleeding, or is causing discomfort, I recommend having Twilight seen by a vet. I hope this helps and that all is well!

It sounds like this brown stuff is flea dirt. I'm not sure if you were already treating her for fleas but if you aren't, I recommend giving her capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas in 30 minutes. Then follow up with a spot on treatment such as advantage or revolution. This is a treatment that has to be used once a month. You have to disinfect the home as well. Wash your bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the carpet and furniture services. I would use a spray such as Indorex to kill the fleas in the house, or you may have to use the flea bomb to kill them all.

Skin lesions like you are describing can have a variety of causes, including skin parasites (fleas or mites), an infection (bacterial or fungal), allergies, or another underlying medical issue. I would recommend he be evaluated by his regular veterinarian to determine the underlying cause for his skin lesions, so he could start any treatment (antibiotics, anti-itch medications, parasiticide) that he may need. In the meantime, I would clean the area will diluted betadine if possible and then keep it dry, and trim his nails back as much as possible to keep him from scratching at it. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It looks from your picture to be superficial skin irritation. My best guess is that it is from too much moisture "down there." This can be from laying in urine, diarrhea, or not drying well after stimulating urination and defecation. Be sure to see how this kitten stool looks compared to his litter mates. Keep all bedding clean and dry. Wash this kitten in baby shampoo and dry very very well. If the rash gets worse the kitten should be seen by a Vet. I hope this helps and good luck!
