Why is my kitten's face swollen near its whiskers? What should I do?

This type of swelling could be something fairly simple and harmless such as an ingrown hair or an insect bite, or something more serious such as a localized infection or even a skin tumor of some kind. If the swelling doesn't seem to be bothering her and she is acting normal otherwise, you could wait to see if it goes away on its own within the next week or two. If it doesn't, or if it gets larger or becomes itchy or painful, then I would recommend having her examined by a vet to determine what it is - he/she may prescribe antibiotics or short-term oral steroids to treat the swelling, or may do a simple test called a fine needle aspirate to diagnose the problem if it appears to be a growth of some kind.

I can't tell from the photo if it is swollen. If you think it is, I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian because it could indicate the beginning of an infection or tooth root abscess. There's not much you can do in that area because Misty will lick off any topical treatments. She should wear an elizabethan collar at all times so she cannot rub the area. If the lesion is not swollen, you can monitor it for a few days. If the area is not healing or is getting worse, I recommend to have Misty examined by the veterinarian. Molly's lesions indicate there is an infection present. Its usually bacteria but fungus (ringworm-which you can get) can also be possible. I would recommend to take Melly into to see her doctor. The doctor will treat her for the infection and may recommend ringworm testing. It could just be a one time thing but fleas, food allergy and environmental allergy can all present like this. They eye being swollen could signify infection on the eye lid, infection of the eye or a scratch. Try to get her in today of tomorrow. Best of luck!

This is often a bite wound abscess either starting or in the healing phase. Continue to monitor this area and if it swells up with fluid, it's an abscess and will need to be drained by your veterinarian. Other options are a skin infection like ringworm or mange, or an old healing scab from some kind of wound. Some cats have ear mites and they are so itchy that they scratch their face raw underneath the ear they are trying to reach.

I am sorry to hear about your kitten! I would recommend bringing her in for an exam at your vet. If the swelling is progressing tonight or she develops any difficulty breathing I would get her to the emergency vet. We could have swelling do to an allergic reaction from an insect bite or exposure to any other substance/plant (most of the time we don't see a mark/know the cause) but I would also want to check for things like an abscess or infected tooth causing swelling.
