My kitten is very sick and I can't afford a vet. What now?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 4 days old

Our kitten is really sick. He's lethargic, won't eat, keeps peeing himself, drooling, shaking, fast heart rate and his gums are pale but we don't have the money to take him to a vet. What can we do?

I'm sorry to hear that Sabbath is so sick. Pale gums, lethargy, and a fast heart rate may be signs of anemia, or a low red blood cell count. This could be due to a flea infestation, infectious diseases, or cancer. Sabbath really must be seen by a vet. Aside from treating a flea infestation at home (if one exists), there really isn't anything you can do at home to manage clinical signs this severe. Try to ask your vet if they accept payment plans or have other financing options available.

This is really tough if you truly have no access to veterinary care. It sounds like your kitten has a very serious infectious disease, injury, or other malady and he could quite possibly die. Make him as comfortable as possible and hope for the best. Pray if this is in your worldview.

Kairi sounds extremely ill, and she does have to see a vet immediately. She could have a severe systemic illness, internal bleeding (due to the pale color of her gums), a severe UTI, or could be injured among many other causes. Her symptoms constitute a medical emergency, and I can give you some resources that may help you afford a vet. You can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. Best Friends also has a list of resources that offer financial assistance on their website.

My kitten is gravely ill, not eating. What can I do before the vet?

I’m so sorry to hear about Scruff :( unfortunately, she sounds serious enough that there is nothing I would recommend for doing at home. Keep her warm and encourage drinking. Consider carecredit.com - it’s a line of credit you can apply for instantly online and can be used for human or animal healthcare. It’s generally low or no interest for 3-6 months and is accepted at many vet hospitals. If you are approved, go to the nearest 24 hour ER clinic. Be warned that dependinf on her underlying condition and status on arrival, the doctor may recommend intensive measures (hospitalizing IV, etc.) or humane euthanasia. Unfortunately, sometimes there is no realistic “in-between” option. I’m so sorry again and hope for peace no matter the outcome.

Mittens is a lovely looking girl! Unfortunately there isn't anything you can do at home for her, she has to see a vet as soon as possible because she sounds quite sick. It's serious that she's had diarrhea with blood in it, she's not eating much, she's quite thirsty, and is lethargic. My kitten is sick, pale, dull, and shivering. What should I do?

I am sorry your kitten is not feeling well. Unfortunately it sounds like she really needs to be seen by a vet. A lot of things can cause them to look pale. for example anmeia secondary to parasites and infectious disease. Also feline leukemia and feline aids can cause illness in a young kitten. I would try to keep her warm and syring feed pedylite or water. You can try to warm up wet food to see if that helps with her appetitie at all but she really should go to a vet

My 3-month-old kitten is sick, not eating, has pink gums. Vet needed?

The color of gums can help us guess at the red blood cell level, but it is a poor guess. White gums would mean really, really sick, and pink gums don't tell us that a pet is healthy. Mello may have an upper respiratory infection, which most cases are viral. But they can hit the body hard and often the kittens need oral antibiotics, fluids, supplements like Lysine, nutritional support, etc. I would really recommend that you have him examined by the vet since this has been going on for a week and he isn't any better.

Poor Sebastian! This vomiting could be caused by a GI illness, pancreatitis, eating something rotten, or a foreign body. Given that he hasn't eaten in 24 hours and is vomiting, a home remedy is not an option for him. Normally, it would be recommended that food is withheld then a bland diet is feb, but Sebastian is vomiting after not eating, so this home remedy would be unproductive and vets recommend a visit to the clinic if vomiting occurs in the absence of food when trying the home remedy. I would take him into a vet now, he should have medical attention.
