My kitten is sick, breathing hard, and I need help with vet costs.

My friend has a kitten and it’s sick. He doesn’t have money to bring it the vet. The kitten mouth is open like breathing issues. It only wants to sleep and it look thinner. Can you help me, please? The mother cat will take him from me, put him on the floor and walk away from her baby. I want to help the kitten the best I can!

Open mouth breathing is a sign of respiratory distress in cats, and is a medical emergency. Kenway needs to see a vet now. If paying for a vet is an issue, you can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. Best Friends also has a list of resources that offer financial assistance on their website.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! So sorry to hear about Luna. I would advise that you get her evaluated immediately. Open mouth breathing is never normal in a kitten/cat unless they are extremely sick or very stressed. Your vet can evaluate her and advise a diagnostic and treatment plan. It is possible that she has a nasopharyngeal polyp, foreign body, fluid in her lungs, fluid in her chest around her lungs, etc. Some testing will probably be required including blood tests, chest x-rays, etc. Good luck with Luna.

Poor Pooter! There are a couple of things that can be wrong with him. It is concerning that he becomes stressed out easily and starts open mouth breathing. It is not normal for a cat to open mouth breathe, and it can be a sign of respiratory distress. Because Pooter was bit by another animal, he could have been infected by a disease from that animal. Given the open mouth breathing, it is best that he is seen by a vet, as it's not possible to recommend a treatment without knowing the cause of the symptoms. In some cases respiratory illness in kittens can be fatal. I recommend contacting your local Humane Society’s to see if there is any financial assistance available for pet owners. Yes, you should be worried about his breath i'm afraid, upper respiratory infections are very common in young kittens and can be fatal if left untreated. his breathing rate is way to high and he is most likely suffering from an infection, you need to take him to the vet ASAP in order to get him an antibiotic course.

Any animal, particularly this young and presumably not fully vaccinated, with respiratory signs, should be seen my a veterinarian. If your Kitkat appears to be in true respiratory distress, this should be considered and emergency and should be seen right away. Signs of true respiratory distress in a cat would be open mouth breathing, pale white to blue mucous membranes (open mouth and look at gums), fainting episodes, or resting respiration of more than 30-40.
