Why is my 6-month-old kitten pawing at her mouth? Teething or pain?

That is a little biot more blood than I would like to see. Very carefully open your kitty's mouth and check the gums, teeth and tongue. There may be ulcers or an injury or he has a tooth that is meant to come out but stuck at a funny angle. If so your kitty needs to be seen by a veterinarian for an exam. If there are no wounds other than where he lost a tooth, then there is nothing you need to do and the bleeding and discomfort should go away soon.

Teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, is a classic sign of discomfort or mild pain. I recommend toys for her to chew on which will help with this. This process usually ends at about 7 months of age. Try gently rinsing out Mittens's mouth with cool water. If she is pawing at her face still, that tells me she is in a lot of pain and needs to see a vet now. Do NOT give her any human pain medications, many are toxic to cats and are fatal if given. Should she have stopped pawing at her face, you can wait until tomorrow to see the vet. Best of luck.

Licking the lips and pawing at the mouths area can be a sign of nausea or a sign of a problem in the mouth cavity. if the issue does not resolve within 24 hours i would recommend taking her to the vet in order to get it checked and treated.

I am sorry to hear about your concerns!!! It sounds like your kitten is of the age when it is getting its final adult teeth (usually 6-7 months) so it is possible your kitty is just losing her baby teeth. When kittens are teething sometimes they do have a bad breath/odor while they are teething. When the teeth fall out we can have some bleeding at the gums as well. If the bleeding was prolonged, your kitty is having trouble eating or is lethargic or pawing at her mouth, I would recommend an exam by the vet to look at the oral cavity to ensure there aren't any signs of infection, a foreign body stuck in the gums, or ulceration. Kittens typically start teething around four months of age. so if Angel is about six months of age, she would be at the tail end of teething. It's certainly possible that teething could be causing her lack of appetite. Teething is painful, and some cats will avoid eating when teething. Try soaking her food in tuna juice to make it softer for her to eat. It's unlikely to be her first heat causing a loss of appetite. When cats go into their first heat, they become more affectionate and more vocal. In fact, cats in heat can be extremely annoying! I would recommend having her spayed to avoid annoying behaviors as well as urine marking, wanting to roam, and kittens. If Angel refuses to eat her softened food, then it could be something else causing her to not eat such as a systemic illness, inflammation, injury, or infection.
