Kitten recovering from panleuk: high WBC, low platelets. Is he okay?

An RBC of 7 is seriously low. It will take quite some time (around three weeks to get a normal RBC count) for your kitty to make new blood, so it is important that it eats and drinks. I would actually feed it canned food only, and even add some minced beef (hamburger) to it to make sure it has enough iron and moisture to make new blood. He should get a little bit better every day. Such severe anemia weakened your kitty and that is why he is so lethargic.

I hate to hear that Picasso is sick. Your veterinarian is suspecting Panleukopenia because his white blood cell count is so long. Other immune suppressive viruses like Felv/FIV or a severe systemic infection like septicemia could also cause such low white blood cells. All of these conditions are serious. It can be indicative of an immune problem, but can occur for various other reasons. I would have it checked again in a few weeks in case it was just transient, also confirming a low wbc count on a microscope is a good idea as machines can get it wrong. Maybe your vet already did this though.

Parvo virus in cats (also known as panleukopenia) is a very serious illness with a poor prognosis. If Blue was not tested for feline panleukopenia and his diagnosis was an educated guess, it may be that the bloody stool and vomiting were caused by some other bacterial or viral infection, or intestinal parasites. I do hope that he continues to get better and go back to completely normal! A true panleukopenia virus infected cat can continue to shed virus particles for 6 weeks. I do recommend that he be seen by the vet to start vaccinations next week to prevent other viral infections that are prevented with proper vaccination. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm glad everything tested negative for Kitty. We do not have an test for panleukopenia. And we do not test healthy cats for it. Cats with panleukopenia are sick: vomiting, diarrhea, low white blood cells. We sometimes use the dog Parvo snap tests to test cats who are sick that we think may have it but we usually diagnose it based on signs and blood work (CBC=complete blood count). I would keep her separate from your other cats for 2 weeks. I am assuming your vet started her vaccines and gave her the first FVRCP vaccine which has panleukopenia in it. She should have a second booster 3 weeks after the first one. If you want to be 100% safe, keep her separate until 2 weeks after the 2nd booster (5 weeks total, that is a long time!). But I would think that if she had no signs in 2 weeks she is likely fine. I usually see stray cats or new kittens pass upper respiratory viruses more often than panleukemia. I hope this helps!

My concerns are that Kim has a high white blood count (indicating possible infection or immune mediated infection) and REALLY low hematocrit of 12%. The hematocrit is the percentage of red blood cells in the body. Usually when it is that low, the animal needs a blood transfusion. Granted I didn't do the exam on him so I would call your vet to discuss if this is needed, as well as additional diagnostics or medicines. I would also talk to them about whethe he needs to be hospitalized in a 24 hour care until he is more stable as he sounds very sick. I hope this helps and he starts to feel better really soon.

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am so sorry about little Zora. Yes, it can take some time for her body to heal. The blood transfusion probably saved her life, but now her bone marrow has to kick into high gear to replace those missing & destroyed red blood cells. It can take up to 3 weeks for her blood count to return & stay at a normal level. This does not mean she will be weak & lethargic the whole time, she should get stronger every day. Stay in close contact with your veterinarian, do not skip recheck visits, & keep her as protected as possible. Her immune system is pretty weak, not only from being so young, but from the anemia, so keep her indoors & away from any unvaccinated cats. With time, she should get well, & have a normal life.
