My kitten painfully licks and kneads my face. How do I stop her?

I strongly recommend for her sake that she invests in a large crate to confine him to when she is sleeping - provide food, water a litter tray and cosy bed so he can settle comfortably on his own. I would also recommend a natural calming supplement such as royal canin calm food or kalm aid. A pheromone diffuser may also help to ease any stress and anxiety which may be triggering such repetitive behaviour

Thank you for taking care of this little kitten. To improve this behavior make sure Lisa is getting enough to eat, feeding her every four to six hours during the day will help. I would start her on some kitten wet food or moisten dry with kitten milk replacer. She can start eating solid food off of your finger then direct her to a flat plate to lick the wet food from. This behavior will improve as she isn't hungry and she grows up. I had a kitten once who also did this. I found that when I gave her a stuffed toy with the fur the same color as hers, she slept with the stuffed toy and kneeded and nursed on it for comfort, instead of on me. Kitties show affection in many ways and this is one of them. He is still very young so he is likely mimicking suckling on his mothers teats wheh he was a newborn. I would recommend removing him from your room when he starts this behavior and then giving him a catnip toy to play with instead. You can also purchase toys that stimulate his hunting behavior and can keep him occupied. He also may be trying to wake you because he is hungry. Get an automatic feeder for him, that way you can set the timer to feed him 15-20 minutes before his typical behavior happens in the morning. This may just do the trick! It sounds like Bandit may be exhibiting normal playful kitten behavior. I would try to redirect him with fun toys (if you haven't found one he likes yet there are a wide variety at hte pet store, from laser pointers to stuffed toys with feathers and others with catnip inside) he might enjoy to keep him away from your face. If you have long hair then keeping your hair up/out of your face may be helpful for a time as well. If he persists in trying to get your face despite you offering him other things to play with then get up and move away from him and do not interact with him, as he wants interaction from you and even if you are telling him no or pushing him away, he will consider this a reaction and reinforcement for the behavior.

This behavior is relatively common in kittens separated from their mother at a young age. I don't know that you could stop this behavior now that it is ingrained - you may want to restrict access to your bedroom in the morning instead. If Biff tries to nurse or bite at other times, you should give him something like a stuffed animal to play with and should remove yourself or him from the room.
