My kitten keeps licking my face and mouth. Is this normal?

Hello Adora! Congrats on your new kitten! Latte is licking you because she is showing affection to you. She's letting you know that she likes you, it has nothing to do with mistaking you for her mother. This is a normal behavior, and not something that I would be concerned about with her. At this age, I would be sure to be feeding her a high quality kitten food. Brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science diet, Purina ProPlan, or Iams. Make sure she gets lots of love and attention from you, and play with her on a daily basis. Also make sure she is up to date on her vaccines, and put her on flea treatment and deworming treatment. This is a terrible habit due to her not being mothered properly after she was born. Obviously not your fault! Absolutely do not allow her to continue this behavior. I suggest you apply some bitter apple on your face (hopefully you are not sensitive to it) once she tastes that a time or two she should stop. Kitties show affection in many ways and this is one of them. He is still very young so he is likely mimicking suckling on his mothers teats wheh he was a newborn. I would recommend removing him from your room when he starts this behavior and then giving him a catnip toy to play with instead. You can also purchase toys that stimulate his hunting behavior and can keep him occupied. He also may be trying to wake you because he is hungry. Get an automatic feeder for him, that way you can set the timer to feed him 15-20 minutes before his typical behavior happens in the morning. This may just do the trick! It sounds like this may be a soothing technique that he continued from kitten hood. The comfort he obtains may be similar to nursing. If you don’t want this behavior to continue then every time he starts I would remove yourself from the situation. Overtime it will become less and less. This is quite normal behavior for a young kitten - it will improve as she matures and becomes more used to being handled. Use a towel when picking her up and try to handle her after mealtimes and after play when she is more likely to be calm and placid

Licking the lips and pawing at the mouths area can be a sign of nausea or a sign of a problem in the mouth cavity. if the issue does not resolve within 24 hours i would recommend taking her to the vet in order to get it checked and treated.

I would not allow this behavior and I would not consider it "normal". It is surely due to her being weaned too early. She would do this to any nipple she finds - male or female or even a different species. Please don't allow her to do this. If you stop the behavior now she will likely stop doing it. Best wishes.
