My 2-day-old kitten has a neck wound. What home care can I give?

2 day old kitten with open wound on neck. Mother cat moved her kittens to a darker more closed off part of the house and when I checked on them I saw the 2 puncture wounds under the neck. It’s not bleeding and doesn’t have any discharge and he is still feeding. Is there anything I can do for him to help it heal? Thank you.

You can try putting some neosporin on it twice a day. If it isn’t healing then I would have your vet take a look at it. She may need oral antibiotics or there could be a parasite in it causing the hole. I hope this helps!

Poor kitten! It is difficult to advise you without knowing how serious the injury is; a picture might help if you want to post and ask again. However, you can try cleaning the wound gently with warm, soapy water. Then apply a small amount of an antibacterial ointment such as neosporin and keep the cats from bothering the area. If it is very deep, it may take a long time to heal. If it becomes infected (having discharge or foul odor), you will need to seek veterinary attention. Hope this helps!

I am sorry to hear that this kitten was injured. I would recommend to try to shave the area with some clippers and try putting antibiotic ointment on it. Unfortunately, since I have never examined the kitten and I do not know how bad it looks, I cannot recommend any oral medications for the kitten to take. Plus with it being only 2 days old, there are limited number of medications it can take. Make sure that you are feeding it kitten formula every 2 hours if it is not nursing. I hope he makes it through!

Ideally you need to shave the hair from the edges. Either way, you can clean the area with mild soap and water and apply neosporin. It may or may not get infected depending on the kittens immune system and how deep the wound is. It is best to get it checked by a vet for antibiotics to be sure but if the kitten is eating and drinking and acting normally you can wait until monday

I would simply use a mild soap and water. Clean it twice daily and dry it well. Be sure to watch for an infection. If the wound is deep then I recommend taking her to the Vet or reposting here with a picture so I can guide you better.

The main concern is to keep it clean and free of infection. You can lightly trim the hair around the wound and then do a thorough clean of the area with iodine diluted 50:50 with warm sterile water or chlorhexidine solution 3%. Then leave the area alone until Newborn can see the vet on tommorrow. Since your kitten is so young use care not to introduce cold water because kitten cannot regulate his temperature very well. And it is best to use gloves when handling kitten as well.

My kitten has a pink neck wound from rough play. Vet or home care?

Hi, Thank you for reaching out with your question! The lesion in the photos appears to just affect the skin, so if it is from rough play with your other cat, it at least doesn’t appear to cut deeper into layers below the skin. I assume this is the only lesion on Sinbad. Therefore, given the lesion is superficial and solitary, you could certainly keep a close eye on it for any changes. If the lesion is actually deeper than the skin (like a puncture or full laceration), then you should definitely have a veterinarian thoroughly clean the wound. If you notice it changing shape, size, color, or produce any discharge, they I wouldn’t hestitate to take him to the vet. In the meantime, I would make sure the area is clean and dry. A regular washcloth with warm water (an antiseptic like betadine or chlorhexidine could be used if needed) should be sufficient to clean the area and provide warm compress. Your veterinarian can perform a physical exam and possibly some diagnostic related to the skin (skin scrape, biopsy, etc) if indicated.

It's good that the area has stopped bleeding. I would keep an eye on it for now. I would gently clean the wound with warm water and antiseptic soap. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and Nick will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. I hope this helps!

My stray kitten has a wound. What medicine and food should I give?

Poor little Kuri. I can't be positive, but it sounds like she may have an abscess which is an infection usually resulting from a bite wound. Wash the wound gently with antibacterial soap and rinse it well. An antibiotic such as clindamycin will usually help these infections if the gentle washing does not clear it out. Generally a kitten her age should be eating kitten food. The milk may actually cause her tummy to get upset if she is not used to drinking it. Hope this helps.
