My 4-month kitten is lethargic and hasn't eaten in 2 days. Emergency?

If this has been going on for more than a few days it might be better to see an emergency veterinarian today, however if the symptoms are more recent you may be able to wait. If Greta's gums seem pale or she is having trouble breathing, or if she has a history of other medical problems it would also be better to have her seen today. Otherwise I think you can probably wait until tomorrow. Ultimately these symptoms are somewhat vague and can be a sign of a number of problems so you should go with your gut.

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Poor Gypsy has picked up an infection, either bacterial or viral. It is also possibly he has gotten into a fight with another cat & has sustained a bite which in now infected. Cats can not go very long without eating. After just 3 days we can see damage to the liver. Gypsy needs to see a veterinarian tomorrow to see if he needs some fluids & antibiotics to help get well & feel better.

I recommend taking her back to the vet for diagnostics- blood work and radiographs- and more aggressive treatment. It sounds like testing hasn’t been done yet and the fluids and anti nausea meds haven’t helped. Cats cannot go very many days without eating and forcing them to eat can make things worse. It sounds like he is getting sick. Without additional clinical signs it is hard to say exactly what is causing his lethargy and decreased appetite but he could be starting with a respiratory virus or a gastrointestinal virus. He could also have parasites that need to be treated. If it continues than he should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. Your vet can run lab work to help diagnose and then determine the best way to treat. If he is unvaccinated, please discuss a vaccine plan with your vet once he has recovered from this illness.

Loss of appetite can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam. This is a medical emergency, and Bonney needs to see a vet now. She sounds quite sick, and it's actually extremely serious when a cat stops eating. They will develop a fatty liver which is fatal without treatment if they do not eat for a couple of days. That must be prevented, and the only way to get the needed treatment for her is through a vet. You cannot treat this at home. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. Best of luck.

Given that she hasn't eaten for two days and is lethargic and vomiting, I have to recommend that she be seen by a vet as soon as possible. This could indicate a severe disease, or toxin ingestion.
