Why does my kitten gurgle when breathing after formula feeding?

You need to take her to the vet for an exam. He will need to listen to her lungs to see whether she inhaled the formula, which is life-threatening. There is also a possibility that she may have a cleft palate which causes the milk to be inhaled or not being swallowed properly. Your vet can check your kitten for that. Unfortunately a cleft palate is not an easy defect to fix. It is very important to feed the kittens while they are prone, ie NOT on there back. If you feed them like a human baby they will have problems drinking properly. Make sure you stimulate their anus and urinary opening so they release the urine and feces , which you can wipe of with the moistened tissue you used for stimulation.

If you are completely unable to feed him and it has been 24 hours since he has eaten, I would seek emergency care ASAP. There may be a functional issue or deformity that is preventing him from being able to eat properly which may need surgical correction or IV fluids/feeding tubes to bypass so he can get the nutrition he needs. Please try to seek care immediately at your vet or a local ER clinic, especially if he cannot eat at all or seems in distress.

An upper respiratory tract infection (URI) due to a viral or bacterial infection is the most common reason for congestion in kittens. Common signs of a URI are: congestion, raspy throat breathing, nasal or eye discharge, sneezing and coughing. Herpes virus is the most common cause and usually runs it's course but it can lead to a secondary bacterial infection. If the nasal discharge is yellow or green, he is lethargic and not eating well that indicates a need to be seen by your Vet. If he is eating and drinking then you can watch him since it has only been 2 days since you adopted him. If his symptoms persist for a week or more then he should be seen. Have a good day!

Please look closely at her eyes and nose to see if she has any discharge from them. Sometimes kitten can have upper respiratory viruses that can make their breathing more audible. If she seems do be doing well otherwise, I would monitor for now. If she stops eating, seems lethargic, or you have any further major concern please take her to your veterinarian. Freya's first kitten check up should be at 8 weeks, so I would recommend to schedule a general health check up for her soon. She will get her first vaccine and you can mention this problem to the doctor at that time as well.

It could be that Serenity has a respiratory infection, but what really concerns me is that she is having a hard time breathing. That could easily lead to respiratory distress and potentially death. Because of this, I think she needs to see a vet now to be safe. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. I would worry that Charlie has an upper respiratory infection. Viral disease is most common, and a secondary bacterial infection could occur as well. I’d recommend having Charlie examined by your veterinarian. If you think he is having enough difficulty breathing that he is in distress you should see an emergency veterinarian.

If she is having upper respiratory signs associated with the inhalation of the water and the milk such as changes in breathing, difficulty swallowing, nasal discharge, weakness, loss of appetite or other changes, please take her into see her veterinarian soon as she may have developed pneumonia from aspirating the liquids. She may need a chest x-ray to confirm this and may need to be on antibiotics for a while. If she appears normal otherwise, just keep an eye on herald take her in if any of the above signs are witnessed.
