My kitten has FVR, fever, and severe breathing issues. ER time?

Hi. Poor little kitten. Thank you for taking care of her. It sounds like she has a pretty severe upper respiratory infection and we'll need antibiotics and are there treatments. If her breathing is concerning you I would recommend the ER. If you think she can wait until tomorrow, but you could try now to help open up the Airways is Place her in a bathroom with the door closed and the shower running very hot and making it steamy in my bathroom for about 15 minutes. This will help break up some of the discharge and hopefully help her breathe better. But my recommendation would be the ER.

It could be that Serenity has a respiratory infection, but what really concerns me is that she is having a hard time breathing. That could easily lead to respiratory distress and potentially death. Because of this, I think she needs to see a vet now to be safe. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. Oh no, poor Saimee! Unfortunately there is nothing you can do at home when a cat is having trouble breathing. That is a medical emergency and requires immediate veterinary treatment. She has to see a vet now, and I would find the closest vet to you to take her into right away.

The postures in the photos do indeed look like she is in heat currently but they do not explain the fever, panting or high heart rate. Given it has not responded to medication so far, further investigation with a chest xray and blood work to assess for infection or inflammation may be worthwhile. I would not recommend breeding her given her current symptoms as pregnancy would be an additional strain and any heart or lung condition

Most of the time Calicivirus causes symptoms only in the upper respiratory tract: the nose and the mouth and back of the throat (it can affect the eyes as well). Even though it sounds like Daisy may have a congested chest this may be referred noise from her upper respiratory tract. Since she seems worse it is also possible that her secondary bacterial infection has traveled into her chest causing pneumonia, which is a rare complication. If you feel she is having labored breathing not related to a clogged nose, or if she has been very lethargic or uninterested in food it might be a good idea to see a veterinarian on an emergency basis to rule out pneumonia.

Hi there, and thank you for posting this question. I am concerned as you are about that high respiratory rate. I would also be concerned about other lung problems and would recommend an x-ray. Kittens can develop an infection called FIP that causes fluid to build up in the chest and/or belly. I would want to make sure this isn’t what is happening. Best of luck and I hope she improves soon. Yes, you should be worried about his breath i'm afraid, upper respiratory infections are very common in young kittens and can be fatal if left untreated. his breathing rate is way to high and he is most likely suffering from an infection, you need to take him to the vet ASAP in order to get him an antibiotic course.
