My kitten is still sick with fever and panting. Is she in heat?

I would be very concerned for cardiac disease or infectious disease (pneumonia) based on those radiographs. With a temperature of 35 C (95 F) that is absolutely an emergency situation. You can see panting with cardiac disease when pulmonary edema begins to develop, which is when fluid is present within the lung tissue and does not allow for adequate gas exchange to occur. I recognize that this was posted 3 days ago, but if Sasi has not been re-evaluated by her veterinarian she needs to be ASAP to determine a treatment plan and if further diagnostics are indicated (echocardiogram, airway wash, etc.).

If you think Juliette still has a fever and is having difficulty breathing I would recommend going to the ER to be safe. It is possible that the trouble breathing is due to congestion and complete blockage of her nostrils, but occasionally cats can develop pneumonia secondary to a respiratory infection and chest x-rays might be recommended. Trouble breathing is always a serious sign in a cat! I hope she's feeling better soon.

Oh my. She could have a number of things causing these symptoms including an underlying heart condiiton, pyometra (spontaneous infected uterus, only seen in cats that are not spayed), or even a viral infection. I would highly recommend getting some blood testing done first to help us know what is going on internally so that we know what she needs to hopefully recover from this. I would take her in to your local vet right away, b/c she sounds very ill and won't get well without medical attention. I hope that your pet Billjeet feels better soon. Best wishes and take care.

Your kitten will need to have an exam by your veterinarian. She could be suffering from a congenital malformation of the blood vessels near the heart or have a hole in the septum of the heart. This would often not show when the kitten is resting, but when it exercises, runs and plays there is not enough oxygen being pumped to the lungs and muscles because oxygenated and used up blood mixes. Problems often do not occur until 3-4 months of age. Please make an appointment with your vet for an exam.

Panting is always concerning and is usually a sign of respiratory distress in cats. She could be having respiratory problems, a heart issue, or have anemia from fleas. I'd recommend trying to find her outdoors if possible and taking her to a vet as soon as you can.

Hi there, and thank you for posting this question. I am concerned as you are about that high respiratory rate. I would also be concerned about other lung problems and would recommend an x-ray. Kittens can develop an infection called FIP that causes fluid to build up in the chest and/or belly. I would want to make sure this isn’t what is happening. Best of luck and I hope she improves soon. Hello! Cats are very stubborn nose-breathers and hate panting. This means they usually only pant if they are in severe respiratory distress. This, associated with the drooling and being outdoors makes me very concerned that she could have been suffering from severe heat distress or heat stroke. Sometimes cats can also hide signs of heart and lung disease until they are truly struggling to breathe, and this could be exacerbated by heat by as well. I would recommend taking her into a vet to be seen. They will likely recommend bloodwork and x-rays to start evaluating her major organ function, check for signs of infection, and evaluate the heart and lungs. I hope you find this helpful!
