My kitten switched food. What if he gets diarrhea? Home remedies?

Hi, i jist switched my kittens cat food. I used to eat daily delight wet food but i switched him to fancy feast as he didnt like daily delight but loved fancy feast and ate it almost instantly & loved it. Now i know, that switching foods instantly is terrible. But i just wanted it to eat something it enjoyed. He hasnt pooped yet but in case of a diarrhea, what should i give it? any home remedies? He is currently on benebac probiotic btw. Just want to be prepared. He on antibiotics fr cat cat flu

Hopefully Salam will not have any problem with the new food but definitely probiotics would be my advice. At the moment I wouldn't add anything else, just focus on cat flu treatment and make sure he continue to love his new food (sometimes cats can become inappetent when having flu as cannot smell properly their meal)! It is likely due to the sudden change in diet. Withhold all food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until the stool is normal then transition slowly back to the regular diet. If the diarrhea doesn't resolve or if he develops other symptoms (vomiting, lethargy, loss of appetite, abdominal pain) then see your veterinarian.

Try to then offer her boiled boneless chicken and rice every 6 hours in small portions. if she is eating and not vomiting, continue with this diet for 2 days.

After 2 days, you can put her back gradually on her normal dry food.

If the diarrhea does not resolve, take her to the vet to get treatment.

I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken/white fish and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 72hours. Then gradually reintroduce the diet you want to feed him on over 5 days.

I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence.

My 6-month-old kitten has diarrhea. How do I fix it and add fiber?

I would actually recommend starting with a vet visit to check for intestinal parasites at his age. And then explore different food options or pursue other testing as the vet recommends, because there is almost certainly an underlying issue (although that doesn't mean it's something serious or dangerous. Probiotics, a short course of antibiotics, a hypoallergenic diet can all help with diarrhea in cats. If you can't get to the vet and want to try fiber, you can mix in unflavored metamucil with his food (aiming for about 2 tsp) once a day to see if that helps, but it's probably going to be a waste of money (both for the metamucil and the wasted food if he won't eat it). Hi, I'm Dr. Johnson. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Peaches! Diarrhea can be from a sudden food change and intolerance to the new food. If you changed the food abruptly then he just may have not had time to adjust. I would recommend changing him back to the original food until his stool is normal then if you still want to try the new food, change it slowly. If the diarrhea returns he can not tolerate the new food. Other causes of diarrhea in young kittens are parasites, viruses and bacterial infections. If the diarrhea persists, he starts vomiting or stops eating he should be seen by your Veterinarian! Good luck!

My 9-year-old cat has diarrhea from new food and stress. What to do?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Toffee! Causes of diarrhea in cats are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, diet changes, new foods or treats or food allergies and intolerances, metabolic conditions like hyperthyroidism, kidney or liver disease, pancreatitis, and stress can sometimes be the cause. I would stop all wet food or at least the new wet food. If the diarrhea is bad then fast him for 12-24 hours. You can start a probiotic, I like Purina fortiflora which you can find online. If the diarrhea persists he would need to see a Vet to have medications prescribed. I hope this helps and I wish Toffee a speedy recovery!

It is most likely that he has a viral form of cat flu, this is really common especially in cats who have been in shelters. There is no treatment for the virus as such, if he seems particularly unwell it may have become bacterial so a trip to the vet and sone antibiotics may be required. The diarrohea could be infection or just inflammation from stress/ intolerance etc. If it is intermittent I would try a gadtroitestinal food and you could give a pribiotic. If it becomes regular you should go to the vet.

My kitten has diarrhea and is lethargic. Is it new food or vet time?

Poor Sushi! The diarrhea could be due to many conditions including the new diet, bacterial over growth, parasites or even organ disease. If the diarrhea has continued beyond 24 hours, I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian. With continued diarrhea, there are often bacterial shifts in the gut that will make matters worse regardless of the initial cause. Make sure to bring in a sample of fresh stool. The doctor will check her for parasites and bacterial over growth. Many times a bland diet can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. I hope Sushi starts feeling better quickly!
