My kitten fell, has a hurt leg, and blood in poop. What should I do?

Poor kitty. I’m assuming the leg was splinted already? If not the vet needs to splint the leg so that it is stabilized and has a chance to heal. Also kitty ness to be on oral pain medication in addition to the injection the vet gave him, which usually only lasts for about a day or two. If he is in pain then he will continue to refuse food. Additionally I would check with the vet to see if the the anti internal bleeding injections have a side effect of inappetance. He may need to reduce the dosage or stop it altogether. Consult with your veterinarian on this since legally they are the ones who need to change any prescribed medications for kitty. I would also recommend bloodwork analysis to check for internal damage to kitty’s kidneys or liver. I hope this helps and that your kitty gets well soon. Best wishes and take care.

Oh no. Poor kitty. : ( There isn't much you can do if there is internal bleeding and a serious musculoskeletal injury here. You just have to keep Tifa in a quiet isolated room and try not to stimulate her much. Bring her small amounts of water via a syringe of small turkey baster and some soft canned food. Getting her seen in the morning is all you can do besides this. I would not recommend giving her any over the counter human pain meds as these are very toxic to cats and can cause acute liver and/or kidney failure. Best case scenario is that she just has a bad muscle sprain and inflammation of her intestines due to the stress. However, an abdominal radiograph and bloodwork testing needs to be done to determine what internal injuries she has first, so that we know how best to help her condition. I really hope that she will be ok through the night. Lay her in a soft bedding (a couple of old t-shirts and a bath towel can do) for tonight to make her as comfortable as possible. The soft stools could be cause by trauma from the fall, a parasite, or an infection. The best thing would be to have a vet examine him to see if he has any injuries from the fall. If you can't get him to a vet and he is otherwise acting normal then you could deworm him with a broad spectrum dewormer, feed him a bland gastrointestinal diet, and add a probiotic to his food and see if that helps clear up the soft stools.

Blood in the stool is very worrisome to owners and I understand that but if it is a one time occurrence I would not be overly concerned. The most common reason for this colonic irritation is internal parasites. I suggest you speak to your vet about deworming. The two common parasites to cause blood in stool is hookworms and coccidia both of which are treated with different dewormers. You should have your vet run a fecal test first to figure out if that is the underlying reason. I would also suggest you start her on a probiotic and use it for at least 2 weeks. I recommend Fortiflora but any probiotic for cats should be OK (no human probiotics). Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I strongly recommend taking the kitten to the vet. She may have an injury to that leg, or to her back. She may require x-rays if a fracture is suspected. in the meantime keep her confined to a small area such as a dog crate - room enough for sleeping, food, water and litter box but no running or playing. Do not give her any pain medications as many are toxic to cats.

I'm quite concerned that she has diarrhea with bright red blood in it and is very lethargic. Based on this, I think she should see a vet now. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. Due to the blood and Fluffy being so small, I recommend you have her seen by a Vet today before the weekend. I recommend bringing a stool sample (if she passed actual feces). Possible causes are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, food allergy or intolerance. For a kitten so small I worry about dehydration and secondary infections.
