My kittens have eye infections, can't afford vet. What can I do?

They most likely have upper respiratory infections (URI) and will need antibiotics (both oral and topical in the eyes). If you are going to adopt/rescue kittens you need to be able to afford veterinary care. They are going to need vaccines, deworming and to be spayed/neutered as well. So, if you can't afford their treatment you should consider relinquishing them to the local Humane Society so they can get treated. This is not something you can treat at home, I'm sorry to say. All that being said, there are many low cost/affordable vet clinics in your area (based on the zip code you provided) so if you really want to keep them then find a clinic and get them treated. Poor kittens! Eye infections can be viral or bacterial. Unfortunately you’re not likely to clear an eye infection with at home care. Just like with humans, these guys require antibiotic eyedrops which you will need to get from the veterinarian. I recommend to call your clinic and make an appointment ideally today. Eye infections in young kittens can become serious and cause permanent damage to the corneas. Bring the whole litter and the mother. Certainly cleaning off the teats and the rest of the environment will help but all the kittens have been exposed at this point. Unfortunately, Bear's condition will require veterinary attention. He may require topical antibiotic ointment to help his eye heal. I would try to locate a veterinarian who will accept payments or even contact the humane society and see if they provide low cost veterinary care.

From your description, I would be concerned about an infected tooth root. I would start saving up for a vet visit and possible surgery to remove the tooth if this is the case. Antibiotics will help temporarily, but it will happen again until the tooth is removed (if the vet determines it is a tooth issue). I do not understand why the shelter will not treat them. They are young and I assume otherwise healthy kittens. If their symptoms can be treated, they would be highly adoptable. They need to see a veterinarian. Perhaps the shelter can reimburse you for their visit? In the meantime, encourage them to eat and drink. You can place them in the bathroom while you shower. Close the door and let the steam build up. Breathing the warm humid air can lessen any congestion they may have. I hope this information helps!

Without seeing the eyes myself it is hard to say what the problem could be. She is 15 years old so there are many diseases of the eyes that could be happening. You can try this ophthalmic gel in the eyes once to twice a day to see if it helps but really, she should see a vet. If left untreated, this can progress and become much worse. If you are unable to get into a veterinarian, I would recommend starting on a lysine supplement for cats and also taking Link into the bathroom with the hot shower running to see if the steam will help Link breathe better. You can also look into Care Credit and apply for a line of credit to be used for veterinary care. I hope this helps and that Link gets better.
