My 3-week-old kitten has eye discharge, is shaky, and bites. What to do?

Poor Chance. It sounds like you are doing an amazing job with him. The blood from the nose and eyes could be from severe irritation of the mucous membranes or due to a viral infection. Since he is alert and interactive I would keep doing what you are doing. I would be syringe feeding him some food every 3-4 hours. You can also hold him in a small bathroom with the hot shower going so he can breathe in the steam. This will help to loosen up the mucus and also help to moisturize his mucous membranes. There is no need to get him wet or near the water. Just hold him since steam rises. Also, if you have a humidifier, you can run that at night while he sleeps. No need to put any medicine in it - just water. If the bleeding continues, I would have your vet recheck him to ensure he doesn’t need any additional meds or his current meds changes. This is not good news. It is likely that your kitten has an upper respiratory infection which affects its eyes as well. This is usually caused by a virus and a secondary bacterial infection which then causes pus which "glues" the eye shut. Your kitty will need to be seen by a veterinarian ASAP, who will give her an exam to find out the cause and then prescribe medications accordingly, DO not wait for this to get better by itself, as the earlier the disease is treated the faster Lily La La will recover, Make sure she eats and drinks well.

Hello, I would guess that Sammie is at least 4 weeks old. He will do fine away from his mom at this age, but will still require alot of attention from you (feeding, cleaning, and socializing). It also sounds like he could have an upper respiratory infection or eye infection which is causing the discharge from his eyes. Kittens that are weak and stressed can be predisposed to developing secondary upper respiratory and eye infections. Continue to bottle feed Sammie and start offering soft cat food. You may continue to wipe the discharge from his eyes with moist cotton balls. If he is not improving, then have him evaluated by his veterinarian immediately. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Any eye problem is considered serious because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. It's possible that Shy does have a scratch on his eye, that can often only be visualized with a fluorescein stain. It could also be that he has an eye infection. I recommend taking him into the vet first thing in the morning. The vet can diagnose what is causing the discharge from his eye, and can prescribe a treatment for it. Hello. This could be the beginning of a little upper respiratory infection. Since most of these are viruses, usually with time they go away ( usually 10-14 days ). As long as Spice continues to eat & act normal, just keep the eye clean of the mucous with a little warm water. If this progresses to a little sneezing, again, as long as he is acting/eating fine, there is no need for treatment. This is probably an upper respiratory infection. it's very common in young cats and is very contagious to other cats as well. It is treated with antibiotic eye drops/ointment and oral antibiotics for about 2 weeks. if left untreated many cats will end up blind or even die from the disease. I advise going to your vet asap to start the treatment right away.

Usually the teeth help us decide how old a kitten is but I'd estimate them to be ~5 weeks old. If they have teeth you can offer wet kitten food (free choice/out all the time) and water for now until you see your veterinarian Thursday At this time keep their eyes clean by wiping away any discharge with a warm moist washcloth until your veterinarian can take a close look at them.
