Can kittens eat Whiskas tuna in jelly? Is it too high in calories?

There are lots of Whiskas products so I can't find the specific feeding guidelines for your cat food. There is usually a feeding guideline written on the bag or box of food that you can follow based on their current weight. Whiskas food is fine for cat's that are healthy on it! I do prefer that cats be on wet food instead of dry food as the extra moisture and higher protein content are great for cat nutrition. You may consider switching to canned Whiskas. I usually feed my cats Fancy Feast because that is easily found at my local grocery store. In general, canned cat food comes in 2 can sizes: small and large. I generally recommend feeding 1 small can twice a day for normal sized cats. Since Zoli is still growing, she may not eat the entire can, but you can still offer it to her to eat.

For an average healthy weight 0.5 kg kitten with an expect 4-5 kg adult weight the caloric intake should be about 150 calories. However, for every 0.5kg that the kitten gains the caloric intake increases by about 50 calories . So at 1 kg he should be offered about 200 calories, and at 1.5 kg he should be offered about 250 calories. Once he is an adult and has stopped growing the caloric intake usually decreases to about 250-300 per day. This is average. Some require more and some less. It is important That Pelly eat mostly kitten food. You can certainly supplement with meat/fish but make sure at least 75% of her daily food intake is kitten food. Whiskas is not the highest quality food but if it's your only option, then go for it. Purina, Iams, Eukanuba and Science Diet are all good brands if you can get them. Make sure Pelly is appropriately dewormed to make sure the parasites are not making him too skinny. I hope this helps.

Hello there. Good question! Kittens and cats need to eat food made for them. The reason for this is that the food is fortified with the amino acid taurine. Taurine is critical for normal vision, normal digestion, normal heart muscle function, to maintain normal pregnancy and fetal development, and to maintain a healthy immune system. Taurine is an essential amino acid in the cat. If taurine levels are deficient, the retinal cells of the eyes will eventually degenerate, impairing the vision. This condition is referred to as feline central retinal degeneration (CRD). Deficiency of taurine will also lead to a weakening of the muscle cells in the heart, causing a condition called dilated cardiomyopathy. Taurine is a component of bile salts, and its deficiency may cause digestive disturbances. During pregnancy, a mother cat must have adequate levels of taurine to maintain her health and to ensure proper growth and structural development of her kittens. Low taurine levels result in small litter sizes, low birth weights or fetal abnormalities. In growing kittens, taurine deficiency can result in delayed growth and development, central retinal degeneration and dilated cardiomyopathy. So, long story short, tuna and cheese is not a good diet. You must find a kitten food that he likes. You may have to buy a few brands/types until you find one he likes. Yes, there is a low calorie food that is formulated for growth, it is made by Royal Canin and is called Kitten spay/neuter. This food will allow Tasha to continue growing but not have as many calories. You may also institute feeding her less amounts but more frequently like 1/8 of a cup four times a day. In the wild cats eat 9 to 16 times a day so their metabolism is geared to run constantly. Make sure to keep her active with lots of play. Best of luck.

Whiskas is not a good quality food, if you plan to change the food, which i think is a good idea, try to switch to a different brand such as Orijen, Acana or Taste of the wild. if this doesn't work try Royal Canin, most cats love it and it is still much better than Whiskas.
