Should I worry about a small dot in my kitten's ear? Mites or scab?

Is your pet itching or scratching at its head/ears? Outdoor kitty with the potential for being in a fight or being wounded? These could be excoriations/superficial wounds. If your pet is scratching/itching a lot than these could be caused by an ear infection (bacteria/yeast/ear mites) or allergy (food, flea, etc.), etc. Some medications older cats take can also cause an itchy face, so if your pet is taking a new medication this could be the cause and you should alert your veterinarian. As the lesions appear raw and ulcerated the best plan would be to have your pet seen by your family veterinarian for an exam and ear assessment. A lesion like that could be a bacterial infection or ringworm (which humans can get). Your best option is to have Mocha examined and tested for ringworm. Make sure to protect the area from rubbing and scratching and she should wear an elizabethan collar at all times. This actually does not look like a tick. This could be a little cyst or wart. Check it at the bottom closest to the skin. If it has tiny legs, it is a tick, and you should pull it out; if not, then it is a growth and you may want your vet to examine it.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Lizzie. She appears to have an inflamed area with a scab on it. Has she been scratching her ears or shaking her head? The most likely scenario is an ear infection. This is usually itchy and the patient can cause self trauma from scratching. A lot of times there will be brown to black discharge coming out of the ear. The ear canal, however, is deep and there can be an infection that is not even visible from the outside. She will need to see her veterinarian to determine if this is the case or if she has a small mass growing. I hope this information helps!

Thank you for contacting Pet Coach with your concern about Leo! This scab could be caused by a wound to his ear, and given there is a scab on it, it sounds like it is healing. Unfortunately without seeing it, I can't say for certain what is is and what caused it. It will take more than three days for this to heal, and it's fine the scab has been there for three days. Don't touch his ear since he doesn't seem to like it. Continue to monitor the scab. If it hasn't gone away in another week, it gets bigger, or it appears infected (red, swollen, warm to the touch, pus), then I would take him into the vet. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

As long as it is not bothering Koda, she is not scratching the ear excessively and there is no discharge around the scab, you should monitor her at home. It should fully heal up in 5-7 days. However, if the ear becomes swollen or painful, you will have to take her to your local vets for an appointment.
