My kitten has diarrhea and an eye ulcer. Should I see a vet?

Oh boy. Felix needs to see a vet ASAP if you want a chance at saving the eye. There could be an ulcer, infection, or it could be secondary to several upper respiratory viruses. The vet will do an exam and look closely at the eye to determine what treatments and pain medications are needed.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! He is adorable! The eye could have suffered some damage perhaps caused by trauma requiring medical or even surgical help. The diarrhea could be perhaps due to parasites. I highly recommend that you have your kitty evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment which may include eye drops and anti-diarrhea medications. At his age either may be from a viral infection. The diarrhea can be change in food, stress or parasites based on what he has been treated for prior. If he is not vomiting and still has an appetite then you don’t need to see an Er at this point. However if you notice these changes or bloody diarrhea then I would get him seen sooner

Little Maggie may be in the beginning stages of an infection. These are generally viral but sometimes bacteria can play a role. Its not an emergency but if she continues to have the eye issues or the lose stool for more than 24 hours, I would take her in for an exam and possible medications. A bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice may help with the soft stool. Make sure Rosie continues to drink well as these young ones can dehydrate quickly. Best of luck!

A dewormer would be beneficial if the diarrhea is caused by worms, however if they also have eye discharge or third eyelids showing I would be concerned about other issues ongoing such as a respiratory infection or illness. The kittens, if they are about 2-3 months old, are also of the age where they should be getting their first set of vaccines, exams, etc. It would be best to bring them into your vet for a complete checkup, checking the stool to figure out the cause of the diarrhea, look at the eyes, and get started on a health and vaccination plan.

This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. Diarrhea could be due to something like parasites for instance which is treated with medications or it may be transient. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Because this has been going on for so long, I recommend taking Nuru to a vet for a physical exam and a stool sample test. He could have microscopic parasites that need to be treated. Not all dewormer medications treat all intestinal parasites so it helps to know what he has. If that test is negative, I would recommend an infectious disease test (leukemia/FIV). If all that is normal, the vet can discuss his nutrition. Good luck and kisses to Nuru!
