My kitten has diarrhea for a week, and amoxicillin isn't working.

It appears that she has been tested and treated for many of the common causes of diarrhea, but unfortunately this is a bit more complicated. When this happens, we end up having to do more testing to help identify the cause of the problem. If the orbifloxacin is not working, then I would ask the vet about doing more diagnostics rather than more treatment. This can unfortunately get pricey, but is really the only way to discover the cause of the diarrhea. I am sorry to hear that Oliver is having prolonged diarrhea. It is good you are not ignoring it as it can be a sign of underlying issues. The steps taken so far- deworming, probiotics and diet change are all great first steps for common causes of diarrhea in kittens. As it sounds like he has had no change, I would proceed to look for less common problems. You can ask your vet about sending out a more involved parasite screen- typically sending one to the lab. I would specifically ask about tritrichomonas and giardia screening as well. In the meantime your vet may want to try a different dewormer and/or diet change (like a hydrolyzed food) as well. If all this is negative and the diarrhea persists, your vet may want to do some imaging such as an ultrasound. I hope this helps and he is back to normal soon!

No there is not. You will want to have the fecal done to confirm the infection, so that your vet can prescribe an antibiotic as needed, or other treatment options if an infection isn't the cause. Just giving a general antibiotic may not target what is wrong, or may not be the right antibiotic for the specific type of infection.

Alfie could have a parasite, infection, inflammatory bowel disease, hyperthyroidism, liver/kidney disease, etc. Since it has been a week, it would be a good idea to have full blood work, fecal test, and x-rays done to rule out potential causes. I would also recommend switching to a hypoallergenic diet, like d/d, and see if that helps. A medication called Proviable KP may also help. If your vet didn't already prescribe Metronidazole (Flagyl) than that could be tried, too. If the diarrhea persists than an intestinal biopsy may be needed.

I would recommend seeing the vet. At this point even if the diarrhea was initially related to the antibiotics Jasper may now have a disruption of his normal intestinal flora that requires additional treatment. It's also possible that the diarrhea is unrelated to the antibiotics and instead is due to intestinal parasites or a food sensitivity. If you wait until he stops eating or loses weight he may require more intensive treatment so I'd recommend making an appointment to see your veterinarian this week.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Because this has been going on for so long, I recommend taking Nuru to a vet for a physical exam and a stool sample test. He could have microscopic parasites that need to be treated. Not all dewormer medications treat all intestinal parasites so it helps to know what he has. If that test is negative, I would recommend an infectious disease test (leukemia/FIV). If all that is normal, the vet can discuss his nutrition. Good luck and kisses to Nuru!
